East Yorkshire CideRed Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 Did anyone else notice a definite shake and wobble in the Dolman Stand after Robbo's goal went in!?!?! I've never felt anything like it at the Gate before! And I have a lovely deep gash on my left knee as a memory of last night!
deadratinmycider Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 I was in the Atyeo and i'm sure i saw smoke or dust coming from the Dolman when the secon goal went in!! Also someone I know in the Williams said they thought that stand was shaking too! AG was rocking to the foundations!!
Guest Neo Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 Personally, I found it slightly worrying in the Dolman. Is it normal for some give to be in structures like that? Just keep thinking "christ, it's a long way down!"
The Humble Realist Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 yea the dolman was defnitly shaking was best atmosphere i ever been at at city- hopefyully Cardiff will be better
Guest red_pill Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 it worried me a bit as well... I still vividly remember watching the Bradford fire on tv, and that was in the back of my mind as the whole stand shook beneath my feet...horrible thought
RedM Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 Yes definate movement. Don't tell Health and safety though or they'll close it down. I was wondering what i would land on if we went through.
wesco Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 I saw dust or smoke come from the dolman stand, wondered what it was.
Guest WillsbridgeRed Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 It happens it Liverpool in the away stand. Nothing to worry about
jimmyb Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 Yes definate movement. Don't tell Health and safety though or they'll close it down. I was wondering what i would land on if we went through. Quite possibly the bar if u were lucky!!!! Seriously though a bit worrying - i did see all the smoke/dust coming up from the dolman and assumed it was just from the gravel track runnin by the side of the pitch
Guest bristolbred Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 All buildings and stands have a bit of give/flexibility in them to allow for increase and decrese of weight, as well as expansion/ contraction for change of temperature!!.
Guest Dolman Moaner Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 The stand has actually wobbled quite a few times lately with the larger crowds we have had, but it did seem worse last night. Perhaps it's all the obese kids I keep reading about in the press Cue Neo "Fat Barsteward" response.
Guest bristolbred Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 Should of gotten Isambard Kingdom Brunel to of built Ashton Gate!!. Would of been a magnificent stadium!!. COME ON YOU REDS!!!!!!. Lets make Cardiff rock too!!.
Guest Flump Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 Perfectly normal. Went to a few games in South America where all the fans do is jump up and down. It was like being on a trampoline!
richieb Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 Yep, it was a little worrying, but no one seemed concerned as the earth was moving on the pitch. Mind you seeing robbored in full celebration, it's no wonder the stand was rocking.
East Yorkshire CideRed Posted May 20, 2004 Author Posted May 20, 2004 Thank you to the engineer-minded of you for clearing that up. To be honest I was too busy jumping around myself to be too worried. I wonder if the Milstad has similar "give" in it's stands?! I'm sure we will soon find out.

Guest nickD Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 Stands have to wobble, even a little bit. Otherwise the actual frame would snap with all the kinetic energy going through it (GSCE Physics coming back to me there!)
Guest Mr Snufflelufagus Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 Cue Neo "Fat Barsteward" response. Who ate all the pies you did.
madmax Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 Watching a TV program last week called something like Ulitmate Buildings and it was about football stadiums. They are all designed to move flexibly around one inch up and one inch down. They were showing how they designed the new Wembly Stadium, anyone else watch it? MM
Spud55 Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 Yea they are all designed to move and give otherwise they would simply collapse. It's far more noticable in large cantilever two tiered stands, i think one of the big double decker stands at Villa park has a large amount of give and Villa fans enjoy all jumping up and down because it moves so much.
RedTop Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 Did anyone else notice a definite shake and wobble in the Dolman Stand after Robbo's goal went in!?!?! It's what happens whenever EDR jumps up and down.

Guest Bobo Dave Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 Being a "building type person" (sorry it's my job !!!), all buildings / structures are designed to allow a tolerance for changes in weight, wind, temperature etc. All buildings will move to a degree if any of the above changes up or down, left or right. Drive over any bridge and you'll see expansion / movements joints at each end. All public buildings & structures are regularly tested and checked to ensure these tolerences are within set limits. The stand would be inspected for cracks etc etc on a regular basis to comply with BCFC insurance cover etc etc etc etc. It perfectly safe, but does feel very strange when it happens. Admittedly everything has it's breaking point, but you would have to far exceed last night to get anywhere near it. Did the earth move for you last night, no, but the Dolman certainly did !!!!!
jimmyb Posted May 20, 2004 Posted May 20, 2004 i also have vague recollections of the stand at leicester movin slightly when we were up there last year - anyone else or is this just me??? and didnt liverpool have to close their new stand a few years back after it wobbled like hell when celtic came down - i'm sure that was the first game it was open as well
