Bristol's Best Active Footballer...

Exeter City in my opinion, and the name is "Ryan Harley"...

What Keith Hill said in his post-match interview after his Rochdale side lost to Exeter basically sums up what I thought around 5 years ago when Harley was playing for us under Tinnion!

A goal-scoring / creative midfield player who could probably make it in the Premier League!

When I went to St James Park in pre-season, I heard a lot of other City fans mentioning quite a few of our former players, but surprisingly the name "Ryan Harley" wasn't one of them!

Obviously as a youngster, you can't always tell if they are going to make the grade or not, but I personally couldn't fault anything that Harley did in the centre of midfield in those few games that he did play for us at the time...

When a player does drop down a couple of leagues and into the Conference (which was the situation at the time), it doesn't always mean that that's the level of football you are destined for, and I personally would have liked to have seen him given a chance at the start of the following season for us!

It's still only early days this season, but if Exeter continue to do well, then it wouldn't surprise me if some Premier League teams came knocking on the door for him, but what's annoying for me, is that he could have easily had been our own talisman in the centre of the park, which is something I see people chatting about nearly all the time on here, in that we are desperate for a creative midfield player!

Hopefully we will start to pick up the pace very soon, but I truly believe that the above is a classic example of a mistake that tends to happen way too often in football these days, in that former players come back to haunt you!

A close friend of mine is mates with Harley. Apparently he would jump at the chance to come back here.

Has matured into a fine player since his days with us. His ability to pick a pass along with being a set piece specialist would make him an ideal signing IMO.

200k would do it i say. Maybe he could bring Tisdale with him :whistle2:

How many games did he play for us way back when? I remember wishing we had kept him because i always thought there was something decent there to be developed. Be good to see him come back in the future. We have let too many quality young players leave over the years, which hopefully is in the past now.

2.

I think what really marks Harley out is the way he has dealt with us releasing him.

Having ended up at Weston he then played conference football for Exeter and has been with them ever since, most others who get released by City drift into local non league football and never come back.

I remember one of them - it was away to Port Vale and we were turd - lost 2 or 3-0 but he was our best player on the day. Was surprised he got released after seeing him dominate for the reserves, am less surprised by his success for Exeter - good on him.

I mentioned him as a 'must buy' after the Exeter match... same class as Alex Russell (also recommended and then bought). Just couldn't believe we didn't get him before the transfer deadline..

Exiled fans are far, far better scouts than the official ones. Mind you, that's not difficult is it!

I used to watch him play every week when he was a youngster. He was a striker in them days, I always thought he was a good player and seemed to have all the tools to make it in football. He has done it the hard way by working his way back up through early rejection. He used to play for ST Vallier with my cousin at youth level. They both had their chance but Ryan had the right attitude towards the game and this is the type of player needed at our football club. Young but with good experience, he can create goals but also knows where the net is. We could get him for relatively cheap. He is also young enough to continue to improve as a player which can only benefit our club.
