Players From Smaller Eu Nations?

Why waste time with the EU? Latin America produces the very best and most affordable football talent - Uruguay and Brazil being the best examples.

In general Brazilians are overated. The average European club squad comprises 24.5 players of whom 5.2 are aged 21 or under, 8.1 are over 1.85cm tall, and 8.2 are expatriates. 1.1 of whom are Brazilian. If you think about it thats a hell of alot of brazilians.

Source http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2011/jan/26/european-football-survey Good read on foreign imports if a bit hard going, stick with it!

Slightly off the subject but its the same with blonde hair players or those with unusual hair cuts or flash boots. They stand out from the pack and stick in the mind. There performances may be no better than anyone else on the pitch. The peacock effect if you will, and there value rises. Now I cant back this up with facts but if you read Why England lose and other curious phenomana its all explained in detail. Its a bit like Freakonomics for football. Cant think of a decent example now, but if you watch a random slovakian premier blue league conference semi final play off replay, and two centre backs have a good game ones got a short back and sides and was arguably better, or one with a pink mohawk who will you remember in 2 weeks time? Someone must be able to think of a better example, maybe Cisse at Liverpool?

If we were to develop a scouting network abroad perhaps we could pick up better quality youngsters to put through the academy. With the freedom of movement within the EU there must be kids with bags of potential in countries that have a good footballing pedigree such as Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania that would jump at the chance of moving to England. This would also help with the "Home Grown" rules being trained by the club (I believe they have to be trained by a club in England for 3 years before the age of 21 to be considered "Home Grown"). Even if we developed them to League1 standard we could fund the Academy that way by selling to the lower league clubs unlike now where we just release them and they get snapped up for nothing. We are never going to be in a position to buy ready made top quality players so I see this as the only genuine option for the club. Who knows the modern day Puskas may just be waiting to come to Bristol.

Ahhh Puskas. Looking at the footballing pedigree of Eastern EU countries then Hungary has the best pedigree as they were unlucky not to beat Germany in the 1954 World Cup because they definately had the better players. Of the South American countries, Uruguay is easily the best South American country for footballing pedigree with 2 World Cup wins and semi finalists on 3 occasions that I can think of. Uruguay has a population about the same as Wales !!!!!! While people mistakenly think of Brazil as being the best footballing nation they're not in terms of World Cup success in relation to population. That narrows it down for our scouts - they could concentrate their scouting on Uruguay and Hungary for best value and footballing pedigree !!! :dancing6:
