Cardy
So there we have it - no more journeymen pros. We are going to be investing in a team of exciting up and coming youngsters who we can then sell to make a profit. Doesn't exactly sound like rocket science does it - the problem is in picking the right talent to start with though. The Maynard situation will be a good test of the clubs resolve in this matter. http://www.thisisbristol.co.uk/New-City-chairman-Colin-Sexstone-outlines-club-s/story-12753112-detail/story.html
chinapig
Not rocket science perhaps and Colin has said it before. It looks like an attempt to dampen the wilder hopes of some fans about big name, high wage signings (like Bowyer and Heskey), in which case very sensible. But then again we have failed to follow this very sensible philosophy at various times in the recent past and not just during Gary Johnson's period. The fact that Danny Wilson failed to get promotion after spending a fortune by League 1 standards and Gary Johnson got us up on a much smaller budget should have confirmed that that was the right approach. But after promotion we got over excited and tried to run before we could walk, as much as anything due to Steve's ambition and genuine commitment to the club. More than once we have declared that we will not sign players looking for a boost to their pension fund then gone ahead and done it. Let's hope we stick to it this time, though it will take patience and may disappoint those who want the Bowyers and Heskeys of this world. Keith has proven his acumen for finding the kind of players Colin talks about so seems the ideal man to implement the strategy.More power to his elbow. GrahamC
This tends to suggest the Michael Jacobs link may have some legs.........
The Batman
the arsene wenger school of football management. buy young players on the cheap, watch them develop and sell them on for a fat profit.

ajs202
Doesn't always work though, Akinde, two Irish lads etc. Even Maynard was +2mil so not really cheap. Good strategy but you get a lot of coal before the diamond. Was Albert just beginners luck...?

Good strategy but you get a lot of coal before the diamond. Was Albert just beginners luck...? Value for money does not necessarily mean cheap. It's a question of whether the player's value increases. So a player you sign for £2.5m and sell for £5m is better value than one you sign for nothing and sell for £1m. In that sense Nicky may turn out to be a bargain of sorts.
