Today's Squad V 89/90 Promotion Squad

I was looking down our squad list on the Radio Bristol 'adopt a player' page and was struck by the quality of this year's squad, especially since Rouge and Murray arrived. If we'd had this squad on opening day we would surely have won automatic promotion(?).

I wondered how it would compare against the 89/90 promotion squad. Taking management style out of the equation (you can pick your own manager / style / formation), if you had a pool of both squads (with the 89/90 players at their ages and form of 89/90), who'd make your team?

To help refresh your memory (using my Bristol Babe book for support), the 89/90 pool were as follows (add more if you can remember):

GK: Andy Leaning, Ronnie Sinclair

FB: John Bailey, Andy Llewellyn (Russell Brommage, Rob Newman)

CB: John Pender, Glenn (psycho) Humphries (Paul Mardon, Rob Newman)

MD: Gary Shelton, David Rennie (Rob Newman - he was versatile!)

RW: Mark Gavin

LW: Dave Smith

ST: Robbie Turner, (super) Bob Taylor, (Nicky Morgan)

I'd go for the following, highlighted in red for 03/04:

---------------------Phillips--------------------------

Carey ------ Butler -------Coles -------- Newman

Gavin --------Doc ---------Tinnion -------A Brown

---------------Rouge -------Super Bob ------------

BENCH: Hill, Rennie, Murray, Turner, Smith

So in my opinion, 8 out of 11 of the current squad would get a game (and 10 out of 15 in the squad). So I reckon that the squad that has finished this season is better the 89/90 squad and if they get it right on Sunday will rightfully earn its place in the hall of fame.

Arron Brown over Dave smith?

Dave Smith was fantastic to watch at full pelt but was a bit of a 'one trick pony'. He could be accomodated with two industrious midfielders like Shelton and Rennie (read Burnell and Doherty?) but would make us too lightweight defensively with Tinnion in midfield. Tinnion's passing, commitment and creativity make him a must for the team. Brown is our best left side midfielder, capable of latching on to opportiunities, crossing, as well as working hard and making a contribution defensively.

There is no doubt that the 89/90 team would wipe the floor with this year's.

The year they went up they had 91 points, had won the most away games in the league (12), won the most games in their division (27), scored 76 goals and were a superb team to watch in full flow. They beat this year's team on all counts.

So, given a choice from both squads the team would be:

1. Leaning

2. Llewelyn

3. Bailey

4. Shelton

5. Coles

6. Rennie

7. Gavin

8. Newman

9. Taylor

10. Smith

11. Turner

Subs: Doherty, Morgan, Tinnion, Rougier, Sinclair

Manager : Joe Jordan

Coles gets in ahead of Humphries due to his better disciplinary record.
