4-2-3-1?

Port Said Red

I only listened to the game on the radio yesterday and the commentators wavered between describing our formation as 4-5-1 and 4-3-3. I wondered if we were actually trying to play the 4-2-3-1 formation that has been widely used in the higher divisions in the last few seasons?

It did sound to me like we were using Cisse and Kilkenny to "sit" and prompt in front of the back 4 with Woolford, Elliott and Albert, alternating between pushing up alongside Maynard and dropping into a 5 to defend.

Earlier in the season I suggested that this could be the best formation for this squad after reading a Jose Mourinho arcticle on why he liked to use it. He feels that, (if played correctly with the right players) you can almost manipulate the number of players in your team, depending on circumstances you can have 6 defenders, (with the 2 holding midfielders), 5 in midfield when pressing and 4 attacking players when breaking forward. it's an interesting interpretation isn't it?

I would love to think that this is Dels intention in the long run.
