Why 'del'?

Babbers or Cockneys? How come Derek is known as Del?

He isn't a Londoner that's for sure, and neither are we.

It baffles me, Why do it?

Del Boy Trotter will for ever be associated with our club due to the fact Mandella House does in fact over look AG!!

It was bound to be given to the first Derek to come to our Club....Enter Mr McInnes

I remember Saint's fans posting on here when news of him possibly joining us from St Johnstone was mere speculation. It seems his pet name originated up there in bonnie Scotland, as they themselves were calling him Del, and his assistant Doc. Not sure why, as i agree it's not very Scottish.

I have heard of that before - then again, I am old - that you could be christened/named John but generally went by the name of Jack.

A bit strange and not sure how it came about.

Not a name shortening though.

The actors Jack Nicholson and Jack Lemmon were christened 'John'. JFK was also often called 'Jack' Kennedy. How about Jack Charlton? He was born John Charlton.
