Lack of Action Man
Worn by Mercer at the LDV final apparently. As I never went, I have no idea why he was wearing number 2. Can anyone explain this oddity?
BCFCGAZRUSS
think that was his squad number for the whole season not sure why though i can remember that just about was quite young though
Sargent Pepper
Yeah thats right Mercer wore squad no. 2 that season. I'm guessing young Phillips would have been no.
Monkeh
our no.1 keeper was out injured for a season (i think it was Bo Anderson or Keith Welsh) so Pulis I think gave him the number 2 shirt which was vacant I think Carey was playing right back that season and had a number 18 shirt
nebristolred
Yeah I'm pretty sure Bo Andersen was number 1 iirc. Unusual for Mercer to be given 2 though I know!

PhilC
Yeah I'm pretty sure Bo Andersen was number 1 iirc. Unusual for Mercer to be given 2 though I know! Sounds right for the time. I'm sure there was a reason for this though? Will keep digging...
Betelgeuse
Was that the first season of squad numbers? I remember back then we gave a number to almost every player reigistered to City, even youth players! Millen was number 46 or something crazy. Betelgeuse
Here's our keeper list for that season, 1) Bo Andersen 2) Billy Mercer 15) Steve Phillips 40) Tynan Scope 41) Tony Malessa We had 53 registered players that season! Crazy.
'Orns
Never noticed until we went to Bournemouth in the Cup one year, presumed it was a mistake at first. Pretty sure it was nothing more than Mercer wanted 1, but it was gone so he took the next closest. Looked very odd, like the Argies in WC78 and they done it in alphabetical order, except the **** wanted 10, Ardiles wore
Guest
That was the same year Charlton did squad numbers in alphabetical order I think
BCFC_Dan
I think Mercer signed after Jim Brennan was sold. The number 1 shirt was taken by Andersen, so Mercer took Brennan's number two.

MichaelRobartes
Mercer was a good 'keeper from what I remember, shame he had so many injuries.
