Bristol City manager Derek McInnes labelled his side's performance as "unacceptable" after they crashed to a 2-1 home defeat to Gillingham in the first round of the Capital One Cup.

"I'm bitterly disappointed. We wanted a cup run," McInnes told the club's website.

"Clubs and managers view this competition differently, but we put out our strongest team and the performance was unacceptable.

"At times we looked like we had a lack of confidence and everything we tried to generate in pre-season was lacking.

"I don't think Gillingham outplayed us but they certainly outfought us and outworked us, and thoroughly deserved their victory.

"It shows what can be done when there's enough spirit and desire to go and win a game. We were sadly lacking.

"There's not been too many times I can aim that at the boys but tonight, let's not kid ourselves, we were second best for the majority of it.

"We owe a lot of people better than that."

Our strongest team!! a sign of whats to come maybe!! :ill::surrender:
