History Of Bristol Nightlife (Merged)

Oh yes, some good nights in both of them, along with the Granary and a club in Clifton whose name eludes me. Also going back then, there were the unlicensed clubs that catered for the late night scene, there was one in Brook lane in St Pauls that was signed up as a carpet warehouse, didn't open until midnight or 1am, bar and club at the front, brothel out back, when everywhere else in Bristol shut at 1or 2. There was another little club up a little alleyway at the bottom of Park St, again, a furtive knock on the door to get in. Then up to Johns Cafe which was open all night, at the top of Colston St, for a breakfast before heading home.

I only discovered the unlicensed after-hours scene towards the end of my 1st year at Uni, and finished up in various dubious joints around Moss Side and Hulme, thankfully this was before the Gunchester years.  Never done the same thing in Bristol.

I see Aizoon mentioned the Dug Out:  only ever made it to there when we were in 6th form.

Those of us who left school in the early/mid 70s may remember Scamps in Fairfax Street, next to the Bier Keller, R+Js (Bailey's), The Wheatsheaf pub (now Shangai Nights restaurant) by the Magistrates Court. A few in Park street (names kept changing) such as Curves, not forgetting Vicki's (strip joint) and Vadim's on the Triangle. Le Mans Club was where the Casino is on Anchor Road. Up in Clifton was the Hawthorne's and Tiffany's (now The Glen Hospital). City Players used to congregate at Platform 1. And further out of town was Reeves on Bath Road, and Chasers in Kingswood (Still going?) Also in the complex that currently houses the 02 Academy was The Locarno and upstairs on the same site was Raquels. Not forgetting Busby's on Baldwin Street, which had formerly been the Gaumont Cinema. Any one else got recollections of those days and places, or other places I've not mentioned? Or are most of us that age suffering from things that blank out our "clubbing" days.

To those of you in your 30s who feel the scene was better 10 or 15 years ago - its not. Bristol will always have a thriving nightlife scene. Its just that you discover these things at a fantastic age when you are just entering the world of young adulthood, and probably with few commitments but plenty of cash in your pocket (or on your card). And then as people settle down the nostalgia kicks in, but - unless your Peter Stringfellow - you move on. Good times!!

Tiffany's was certainly the best ever....remember Vicki 's strip joint on Park St and an ugly Welsh rarebit stripper from Cardiff who couldn't understand why I did not want to dance with her rancid body. ..and then the club at Arnos Court.....had some great nights there....those were the days....late 70's/early 80's for those who were probably not wondering

I'm 24 and I literally recognise the names of about 4 places you guys are mentioning

R&J's is what is now Syndicate right? And Odyssey and The Works are old names of that?

I would have killed to grow up in Manchester during the 80s/90s. The music from that place was sensational.

This takes me back to some very happy nights....

Vicki's on Park Street - Great (and very bizzarre) days. Was a lot later than early 80s though when I used to go. It must have survived a fair while then

The Alex.... Rings a bell but it was a long time ago and every visit was under the influence of a combination of mind altering substances....

So you remember the purple hippo on the door too? He'd always let you in for an armful of rushes...

I used to work in the tower office block next door in the mid 90s. Every Tues or Wed lunchtime was Sexy Barmaids hour in which the 2 ladies behind the bar would work in stockings, suspenders and a basque. It was a total lottery though, one week the ladies were in their 20's, next week they could be 40+.

Gaz - that'll be the "Barmaids in Basques" they used to do. One of them was even the landlady's daughter. Used to get some right dirty bastards in there mind, John (the landlady's partner) had to throw one old geezer out for furtively trying to "pleasure himself" (ahem) at the bar!

Proper boozer though, Sue & John who ran it were ace. Played darts for them for years, we were in the Redfield & District League so travelled to such amazing pubs as the Royal Table in Barton Hill, the Crown at Lawford's Gate and the Duke of York in St. Werburghs. Very good times.

Nice one! Never a classy place by any means, but always welcoming. Have passed through there a few times on pub crawls/stags over the years since, although sadly they had stopped the Barmaids in Basques promotion - perhaps for the best, reading your post!

How did you manage to get in there?  I thought you had to be a minimum of 90 years old before they would let you through the door? ;)

We've had tough lives! Used to have a piano in there I seem to remember and some of the old 'uns would tinkle the ivories towards the end of the night. Some proper states in there mind.

Maybe not "classy" - but as you say always a great place for a beer or - even better - a session. We practically lived in there sometimes. Funnily enough I was in there for lunch today. That place has witnessed some scenes

Aaaaah The Glasshouse. So many memories from going in there in my late teens early 20's. Dancing on the tables and staggering home via Noggins chip shop :D

The most bestest chippy ever Dolls. Do you remember The Corn Dolly in the Precinct ........... hold on, it wasn't you was it ?

Yep, The Sawyers is still there, but did you know they turned The Friendship into a bunch of houses? :(

Now that I did not know but was never really "into" The Friendship. Butchers Arms (pre Moorend Spout) was always a good laugh when the merry widow ran it.

I used to be skittle Sticker Upper in the Butchers, Queens Head, Legion and Ringer when I were just a lad.

My mum used to work in the Butchers before she had us kids!

I went in there once and they served us and then spent all their time trying to get us out. We weren't doing anything wrong, I think it was just the appearance of people under 30 confused them.

Tiffany's on the rock nights, brilliant. Dug Out was a one-off - thankfully never caught on fire as it would have been carnage!

Never had to venture far from the Whiteladies Road area for a great night out in those days. Great pubs, student parties and off-licences and the added bonus of City in Divi 1.

Met ex-wife in Lautrecs (sp) in Kings Street (?) in a rare excursion away from the usual happy hunting grounds. Big mistake associating with femmes from south of the river.

The Lochiel and not forgetting The Lightship that used to be a decent place at one time

The lightship! I think it got condemned and sent over to Barry to be scrapped IIRC? Remember stories of it being overloaded and water coming through portholes on the side!

Bristol nightlife around mid 90s was fantastic. Truly one of best cities in the country at the time. Has somewhat dwindled in last 10 years.

Club IQ.. Didn't that replace ritzy ?

Also nobody mentioned Cafe Blue..

I seem to remember it springing a leak and being too expensive to fix.

Too right about Bristol nightlife in the early to mid 90s, Tom. This city ruled musically then and there were dozens of buzzing and innovative places to spend the night time hours.

Much more friendly than the London scene. Happy days.

Har di bloody har har!

Her name is Sue :P

What is the Queens Head now called ? Isn't it something like Nonces's Nook or Poofters Paradise.

Do you remember when Ralph Milne was running it ? Or when Big Cheese was running the Tickenham Star ?

They also had a variable pricing policy depending on if you were locals or not.
