Although I would accept your superior knowledge over Wikipedia the following makes out that Shaw played in every division for City-

Alan Dicks signed Shaw in May 1974 on a free transfer from Leeds United for Bristol City. Jimmy Mann made the same move at the same time. [2]

John Shaw had to wait in line behind regular goalkeeper Ray Cashley who was ever present in 1974-75 and again in 1975-76 when Bristol City finished runners up in the Second Division and won promotion back into the First Division after a wait of 65 years since 1911. However Shaw did make two substitute appearances in the Anglo Scottish Cup in August 1975. [3] Cashley started in goal in season 1976-77 in the First Division before Len Bond was given a chance with two games but was injured so John Shaw finally made his League debut in goal for Bristol City in a 0-1 defeat v Birmingham City on 26 October 1976. This was the start of a run of 103 successive league appearances for Shaw. Bristol City hovered around the relegation places throughout their first season back in the First Division. Lying bottom in 22nd place with four games to go they managed two wins and two draws to finish 18th. The final game at Coventry City ended in a 2-2 draw which was enough to save both teams from relegation with the ball hardly leaving the centre circle during the last 15 minutes of the game. Shaw made 33 appearances in 1976-77. [3] John Shaw was the only ever present City player in 1977-78 with 42 appearances as the "Robins" rose to 17th in the table. Shaw also played in all nine Anglo Scottish cup ties culminating in a two legged final 3-2 aggregate win over St Mirren in December 1977. [3] It was during this period that John Shaw was spoken of as a possible replacement for Alan Rough in the Scotland full international team; but despite his splendid form the call to international duty never came. [4]

With Bristol City rising to 13th place in the First Division in 1978-79 John Shaw started the season in the team and missed only two games making 40 appearances. [3] John Shaw was initially chosen as no.1 again in season 1979-80 which ended with relegation in 20th place to the Second Division. Shaw played in the first 27 league games but was replaced by Ray Cashley after a run of ten matches conceding 22 goals without a win. Shaw made 28 appearances in 1979-80 and also played in 8 of the 9 Anglo Scottish Cup ties which ended in an aggregate 1-5 defeat to St Mirren in the final. [3] Back in the Second Division in 1980-81 Bristol City finished 21st and were relegated on downwards to the Third Division. Cashley began the season in goal before John Shaw was given his chance in December at Shrewsbury Town where City lost 0-4. The signing of Jan Moller later in December restricted Shaw to making 5 appearances in 1980-81. [3]

Bristol City suffered a third successive relegation in 1981-82 but very nearly failed to survive a mid season financial crisis in February 1982 when only a last minute acceptance of redundancy by the "Ashton Gate Eight" saved the club from potential extinction. Moller began the momentous season in goal but was a further victim of the crisis leaving the club after which Shaw took over in March making 15 appearances. This was the start of another long run of 124 successive league appearances by John Shaw. [3] Down in the Fourth Division in 1982-83 John Shaw was the only ever present with 46 appearances as Bristol City finished in 14th place. [3] Shaw was ever present in goal again in 1983-84 when Bristol City won promotion back to the Third Division by finishing in 4th place conceding only 44 goals the second best record in the division. [3] Shaw made 41 appearances in the Third Division in 1984-85 as Bristol City narrowly missed another promotion finishing in 5th place. Bristol City played a benefit match for John Shaw v West Bromwich Albion on 13 May 1985 before a crowd of 1,950 fans. [3] Shaw left Bristol City and moved on to Exeter City in July 1985.

Not at all br, I stand corrected and in fact I'm rather glad to be - John Shaw was another real hero for City.

I'd forgotten his longevity extended to the 4th division and his heroics for City in all 4 divisions should certainly not be overlooked.

As I say, very happy for you to put the record straight.

Now I have read it, it seemed as if I was being sarcastic when nothing could be further from the truth. I wasn't alive to see any of the players talked about on this thread and guessed at Shaw purely from stories my dad has told me. So I was being completely genuine in saying you have far superior knowledge than me on Garland, Ritchie, Shaw etc...

as in pairings as originally stated....cheesely and ritchie

------

I guess as a pair, they're the ones. As a trio, John Atyeo, Brian Clark and Shadow Williams have a lot to recommend them.

Curiously, Big John also played with Brian's father, Don.

That threesome are before my time, as in watching them play, but saying that i lost the plot as regards John Galley and Chris Garland, with hindsight ime a tad embarrassed to say the least cos those guys were playing when i first started watching the city, maybe i didnt take too much notice as a ten year old..and am too slow to google !... :ill:

No problem, br, I didn't take it like that at all.

Pretty poor of me not to remember John Shaw playing in all 4 divisions, especially as he was ever present in the season we got promoted.

That final promotion clinching match at Chester which saw City's resurgence after tumbling down the divisions will never be forgotten and John Shaw stuck with Bristol City all the way through and very much deserves to be remembered for it.

Something else I have heard an awful lot about from my dad!

Fantastic day.

We were all skint so three of us decided to hitch hike up. We were really struggling for a lift when one of our number was picked up by a doctor in a flash car and he disappeared in to the distance laughing and waving.

It looked bleak for us other two until a white van saw our City scarves and pulled up on the slip road outside the services.

It turned out to be a 'cider bus' from Southmead, they literally had their own barrels on board and were more than happy to share them.

We arrived in Chester in time for a few pre match pints with our new best pals and got to the game in good time ( what a massive queue of City fans outside the ground) while our ( no longer grinning) friend turned up just before half time having been dropped off miles from the ground.

Then at the end the City fan next to me was rugby tackled by a steward when we charged on to the pitch - the exact same thing had happened at Coventry - and TC conducted the singing fans from the side stand while we all went completely bananas.

As I said, just an absolutely fantastic day after years of misery.

May 84 .......late winner from Morgan if i recall correctly .......and about 2k city out of a total of 3k attendance!

Took a gash friend of mine to Chester.......he had been going through a hard time with a divorce and stuff and so jumped at the chance of a day "forgetting" his probs

Got there fairly early so took a stroll into the town to have a pint or two only to find a lot of pubs shut in anticipation of BCFC being in town en masse....then in the distance we could hear that unmistakable sound of wurzel songs and city chants coming from a really old oak beamed type pub....rammed with redz of course.........great day and start of the return

There were a (very) small number of Chester Chav's giving the usual crap to us in the away end just as Morgan banged in the

late winner .......felt great to see them shuffle off in the silence of defeat

The club had a saying for that season........."It's now or Never" ........and they were most probably right

I'd like to have seen John Galley play with Chris Crowe as a pair up front. Sadly Crowe was stuck out on the wing for much of his time.

I remember seeing Crowe take three corners in quick succession Dolman/East End corner on a Tuesday night. I think it was against Norwich, (I remember we lost) and he hit the bar with two of them and almost with the third!

Interesting question: Chris Garland is one of only two players to play for City in all 4 divisions.

Who is the other one? :dunno:

As well as the already mentioned Tom Ritchie and John Shaw, Howard Pritchard, a Welsh International, also played for us in all 4 Divisions. He played a quite a few games in the last season in the First Divsion, was a regular in Div 2 but left (for Swindon I believe) and returned for our 2nd Season in Div 4, when we got promoted, and then played in Division 3 in 1984/5.

Can't argue with that either ND.

It was the leaving for Swindon while we were in Div. 2, but then playing in div.3 after returning (and being promoted) which would have flummoxed most.

Great stuff.

I maybe wrong here but when these 2 gas strikers actually played against us during that period I don't think they were very successful at all in fact I cannot remember either of them scoring a goal.

I remember one game against the gas that we won and as we walked past a load of gas fans my dear departed old man said "smash and grab, my ass, how about Merrick and Collier block and tackle".

As it was at the start of my footabll watching days I can't quite remember when they played against us, but Merrick and Collier were Prem class defenders and huff and puff (or whatever they were called) were third division standard strikers, so makes sense.

Growing up in East Bristol I do remember Bannister came to my junior school and even at the age of 9 I thought "what a cock", though that was probably partially down to my Dad's (totally understandable) indoctrination.......

Aww, mint, god bless all our fathers for the guidance, and the soft words when we get battered,
