i hate you butler
speaking on motd about defending crosses-surely del and the defence should be taking this piece of acvice on board.goes on about the defenders balance and how important to keep the weight on each foot balanced when defending balls coming in from the flanks so to be able to react quicker either way to attack the ball.would it improve us? Esmond Million's Bung
judging by the replies sounds like a waste of time discussing class as ever on here of course it's not a waste of time, Hansen is correct and knows what he is talking about and to be fair the defence is the one area where talent is not a necessary element, the right coach could drill 4 youngsters over a long period of time and produce a working defence, the defence has to work as a team, talk to each other, they have to understand and believe their defensive partners are doing what they are expected to be doing and not always have to check before making a move, that's when defenders are dispossessed, they have to look along the line and move up or back together and the most important rule is as defenders it dosen't always have to look pretty and row Z is safety. So 2 points about our defence firstly most of them are far to set in their ways and the bad habits have become engrained and in some cases turd polishing dosen't often work. Midge
In all honesty I also agree that a solid defence should not be that hard to build, a potent attacking force is where the quality and flair players are needed, it really does baffle me as to why we are so defensively naive, you wonder if the players we have lack the mentality, ie concentration, discipline, determination. A team that is hard to beat will always be guaranteed a decent points total, as on a bad day you can always manage a draw, however a poor defence means that even on those days where you play really well, you are never sure of victory, 3 goals at home against Blackburn you'd have thought a lesser team would have seen a return on that, not this lot though they still managed to switch off long enough to be beaten convincingly. Surely if you are a professional sportsman, the thought of defeat and having someone else better than you is more than enough reason to make sure that every measure is taken to avoid coming second

You raise an important point - do we have a designated defensive coach? I know we have Spink for our goalies - which I'm sure will reap consistsnt rewards eventually. Let's hope our defenders glean the same information when watching MOTD...
Chivs
A stationary raspberry jelly on the penalty spot would improve us We've already tried that. Even made him captain. As for Hansen, either he's stating the bleedin' obvious or...he's stating the bleedin' obvious as I've never known him say anything original during his punditry. (Although, in fairness, he is a little more interesting than Lawrenson and Shearer)

Eco
Think we need to sort out our defending from corners/free kicks for starters. Feels like we've conceded a few from these.

Guest
Think we need to sort out our defending from corners/free kicks for starters. Feels like we've conceded a few from these. It's the delivery the matters, poor delivery any team can defend against, good delivery very difficult to defend, requires defenders who are very alert and / or prepared to get hurt to get to the ball first. Surely if you are a professional sportsman, the thought of defeat and having someone else better than you is more than enough reason to make sure that every measure is taken to avoid coming second Exactly when you look at say the top 15 or so sides in the prem, they are generally defensively good but have players that can punish that one mistake that a generally good defence makes. Defence is all about trust, trust that when you under pressure the goalkeeper anticipates and takes up a sensible position ready for the back pass, trust that your goalkeeper will come for pretty much everything in the 6 yard box, trust that your other 3 defenders understand their particular job and relative positioning in any given situation, trust that the midfield are aware and will pick up midfield runners thus not pulling you out of position, trust that when you give the ball to your midfield they will not give it away cheaply and have the opposition coming straight back at you, trust that if the defence and midfield do their particular jobs, that the strikers do theirs and convert chances and hold the ball up when necessary. QPR is a good case in point Harry knows his midfield and attackers are good enough and he is concentrating on organising his defence and it will almost certainly reap rewards. Clearly removing the arm band from Fonts is one positive move. Many more will be be needed if we are to remain in this division.
