Rovers V Swindon At Ashton Gate 1980's

It was during the first season of the move to Twerton, because Police would not allow this game to be played there. Quite confusing with City, Swindon and Gas supporters in the same stadium.

that doesn't sound like it ended well?? before my time, but think the game might actually be floating about on youtube

The Trumpton pitch was notorious. Many of Swindon's promotion rivals were kicking off about Swindon not having to play at Trumpton, claiming they were being given an advantage by playing this game at AG.

Seem to recall that prat Bobby Gould was managing the slags at the time.

The City fans who were there (including yours truly) really wanted to see a draw, with plenty of injuries and sendings off !

There was some trouble outside after the game and several arrests.

The local didn't media didn't put any blame on Rovers or Swindon fans, but announced a 'third party' was responsible..

Remember going to the Gate to watch the gas v. Portsmouth match after the Eastville fire.

Eerie atmosphere with a small crowd and probably a couple of hundred Portsmouth fans, including the bell ringer, who for some reason had been put in the City side of the Park End.

Pretty sure the East End was closed and judging by the number of familiar City faces in the Enclosure there wasn't much support for the gas there.

I stood in my usual place in the enclosure, which was about where the city 'mob' decided to congregate. I only realized this when they started chanting and trying to goad the Rovers fans. Great.

"infiltration from a third camp" haha. Said on the vid it was approx 4k in gas ends and 4k in the swindon ends. Good following from Swindon but wonder how many city fans were in their stands??

I was there (supporting the Gas), if I recall Swindle had the Dolman and open terrace and were in good voice with their 'Lou Macari's Barmy Army' chant backwards and forwards from the stand to the terrace.

I think the game was switched as the police feared it being played at Twerton, but the next week (or certainly within a few weeks) the Bristol Derby was allowed to proceed at Twerton - flawed logic?

Despite losing it was actually a great game, 4-3 as someone else has said.

Many Rovers fans stayed away that day, refusing to come to the Gate.

Seem to remember that there was a small scuffle between City and Swindon in the Dolman during the game, Quite a few Rovers fans chose not to attend because they didn't like the choice of venue. :shocking:

Same mob from the Dolman got escorted out the ground and all paid (it was a darn sight cheaper then) to get in the enclosure, only to get escorted straight back out again after a few minor scuffles no real resistance from the Gas or Swindon.

It says something about the police mentality that they thought it would be safer to stage a Rovers v Swindon game at the Gate rather than Trumpton

There really is no need for all those POLICE SLOW signs all over Bristol - we already know that...

Can't recall home many games they played at AG, but I recall going with my dad to at least one of them (what with him being a misguided fool from the wrong side of the tracks): and fairly sure it was after the Eastville fire.
