Carey 6
Apparently every time Oxlade Chamberlain plays 20 minutes or more, Arsenal have to pay Southampton £10,000! Southampton may not be getting anything for quite a while by the sound of it: "Arsenal are waiting to discover the full extent of the 'bad injury' suffered by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on Saturday. He left Emirates Stadium on crutches after being forced from the field and it has been suggested that he is facing up to a lengthy spell on the sidelines. If tests, which are due to take place on Monday, reveal knee ligament damage, Oxlade-Chamberlain could be out of action for several months." Beyond belief! I can't see what is so unbelievable about this. It used to be (maybe it still is) quite common to link payments to appearances, and it makes sense for Southampton to stipulate what constitutes an 'appearance'. If I remember rightly, in the early 2000s we signed Robin Hulbert from Swindon because Swindon wouldn't play him, being unwilling to trigger another payment to Everton. Fodbarmyarmy
Clever out of the box thinking from whoever negotiated it at Saints...well done If a team like the Arse want your best player then you make them pay top $ for him (or her to be pc) in any way you can... You do. And during their meltdown, Leeds Utd were left paying Seth Johnson something in the region of £35k per week to not play as they couldn't afford the payment they'd have had to make to Derby if he'd played another game. Unlike their selling the sell on clause payment for Gareth Bale for £3million a year or two back. Hindsight eh..!
cider11
At Peterborough Leon Mckenzie would often be injured and was rumoured that was because they couldn't afford the next payment of 25k to Palace as part of the transfer fee.
myol'man
I believe we have a similar clause from Accrington Stanley for Nicky Hunt, but we have to pay them £10,000 every time he has a nightmare. So far we owe them over £100,

pongo88
Not quite the same thing, but can anyone remember Winston Bogarde at Chelsea. He signed on a 3 (?) year deal at £40k per week in 2000. Big money in those days. Unfortunately weeks after signing, Chelsea had a new manager, who didn't want him and tried to get him to leave. Winston decided he would be mad to leave as he would never get as much money anywhere else. He never actually moved from Holland but flew into London each day, trained with the reserves, and then flew home at lunch time! Not a bad sort of job! TRL
Flew every day? Really? Owen used to take helicopter from North Wales to Newcastle, I doubt the flight is more than a hour netherlands to London, so not beyond the realms of possibility for those with money

Aye, he basically downed tools and sat out his contract. A good example of how a Bosman free transfer can be extremely expensive.

Byrd9999
Aye, he basically downed tools and sat out his contract. A good example of how a Bosman free transfer can be extremely expensive. No, he didn't "down tools", he showed up every single day and trained. He wanted to play, but he wasn't going to leave the club because he wouldn't get close to a 40k pw pay packet anywhere else. The club made him train with the reserves/youth to try to force him out. He didn't sit out his contract, he honoured it.

He was quite happy to put in minimum effort, show zero ambition and vegetate in the reserves. Don't forget this guy came from Barcelona and was still in the Dutch national team at the time he joined Chelsea. He didn't sit out his contract, he honoured it. Yes - he did "sit out his contract" so to speak. He just turned up and collected his pay. And gimme a break......there was nothing "honourable" about what he did. His attitude was lousy and he cheefully admitted he was one of the worst buys in the history of the Premier League. He was widely ridiculed at the time and remains one of the most reviled players in the history of the game.
