R A F Officers Murdered By Gestapo

On this day 70 years ago, fifty of our airmen were murdered by Germans. Following their escape made famous by the Hollywood movie 'The Great Escape' the 50 were recaptured by German Gestapo.  All the fifty airmen were shot by the Germans, either on their own or in small groups. They were collected by various Gestapo agents, and driven away. The prisoners were told to relieve themselves, as the ride to a new POW camp was very long. The airmen were then shot in the back of the head. Their remains were then cremated at various locations. All the urns were eventually returned to Stalag Luft III.

....the Germans didn't get off lightly for this heinous act because in February 1945 a certain Dresden Gestapo HQ recieved a visitation from RAF Bomber Command. I raise my glass to toast the men of the RAF.

While I agree with the sentiment Gobbers (other than celebrating the bombing of Dresden; regardless of the military justification, loss of life on that scale should not be celebrated), you're a bit off with the facts. 76 men escaped from the stalag, 73 were recaptured of which 50 were callously executed. Of those 50, only 21 were British with the rest made up of 11 different nationalities; something which is not especially well represented in the famous film

But I do agree with your remembrance of what happened to the poor, brave buggers
