allyolly
Really respectful about the hillsborough disaster and a very moving and impeccably observed minutes silence. A great touch to play iconic Liverpool songs at the end if the game. RIP the 96 Liverpool fans.
Oxford Red
Agree with that. Well observed and the fella on the tannoy introduced it pretty well. Then again its easy to observe a silence when there is hardly anybody in the ground.....
finbarr_in_z
Was a bit worried that there might be some noise dring the silence, but as you say, it was well observed. Could even hear the turnstiles clicking round below the stand. Spooky.

054123
Whatever you think about Liverpool fans, I think everyone now realises its about thd police and government at the time being culpable in and complicit in the death and cover up of 96 innocent football da s like you, I and my children. To many young died on that day. Bettison and he power s that be will get whats coming. Forget the name 'Liverpool', it could have been any club that git ****** that day. Justice will out. Remember the lad you still asked for his mum at 4pm. Thats all the you need to know.
Oxford Red
My opinion on it is that Liverpool fans reputation for 'rushing the turnstiles' late into games to get in - and this reputation is well deserved - put them on a poor footing with the public response to what could have happened and the readiness of some to believe the official reports. This was only 4 years after their disgraceful Heysel behaviour and that, combined with their reputation, I think didnt help in any way. None of the above of course excuses in anyway the obscene and contemptful behaviour of the South Yorkshire Police covering up their own failures and pinning blame when it was their own. BUTOR
Maybe because it was people coming through the turnstiles? Everyone was in by 3 pm, away end was full during the minutes silence

The fact that nearly exactly the same happened to Spurs fans 8 years earlier in 1981 ( follow the link at the bottom and you will see a video of Spurs fans)tells you all you need to know about Hillsborough in the 80's. The same end,and in a FA cup semi final. As you say,it could have been any clubs supporters,it was a tradegy waiting to happen. The ground didn't even have a safety certificate ffs.http://thehillsboroughdisasterdocumentary.com/2011/11/16/hillsborough-1981-disaster-narrowly-avoided/
You Do The Dziekanowski
Both sets of fans respected the 96 just one set decided to do so for 90 minutes No time jokes? Sorry. I'll stop now.........

We played at Sheffield Weds a few years later. We were top of the league and had a big following. I got to the queue at the Leppings Lane end at 2:40, there were two turnstiles open. By 3 minutes to kick off there were still loads of us out side and there was shoving and agitation to get in ( and this is a Bristol City League game, not an FA Cup Semi Final). Sheffield Weds FC learnt nothing from the Disaster, the Policing was appalling and a small minority of City fans were causing a crush to get in Don't be so keen to rush to judgement re the Liverpool fans. From what I have seen of (not really very) big games at Hillsborough, it could have been us, we just don't have enough fans.
BS15_RED
Always found going to Hillsborough an eerie feeling knowing what happened there. Justice for the 96.

From what I have seen of (not really very) big games at Hillsborough, it could have been us, we just don't have enough fans. Yes I remember that well. It was the game where we lost to the last kick having been on a big winning run (11 games?). I was near the front of the top tier which was virtually full, but remember the bottom tier being shut to start with. Then pretty much as soon as the game kicked off, loads started streaming into the bottom tier, having been held outside until the last possible minute. SYP didn't exactly cover themselves in glory that day either, rude, arrogant and power-crazed. I was in a big group that they escorted off one of the trams through the city centre back to the station, and anyone daring to step out was getting batoned and getting told "this is our city, you'll do as you're ******g told" etc. Heard quite a few comments from City fans that they appeared to have learnt nothing from 15 years previous. We had a big following for the game we needed to win under Danny Wilson to make it 11 consecutive wins? The turnstiles weren't opened 'til late and the the queues were thus totally unecessary. Indeed, nothing learned by Sheffield Wednesday following the Hillsbrough disaster. There was a website on the internet showing witness statements to the Hillsbrough disaster showing sections of statements crossed out - I'm amazed that no Police or any of their CPS lawyers have been prosecuted over that. AshtonGreat
I don't think you can entirely blame the police. It was an accident waiting to happen.
Forza Revolution
Very sombering minute pre match. Walsall fans post match in the pub were so bitter. Really couldn't believe it. Few got really aggressive with us, called us cheats for faining injury, diving, fouling etc. called it our cup final
Mr Mosquito
I don't think you can entirely blame the police. It was an accident waiting to happen. Apparently, all the video tapes that could implicate the Police have 'gone missing'. At the end of the day, the Police were paid to control the crowds and they ended up causing a disaster. There's been a Police cover up all along over what happened and the Police did feed lies to the media about Liverpool fans urinating on dead bodies etc.

But you can probably throw alcohol, rowdy fans and generally unsafe terracing into the mix. If you attended football matches in the 70s and 80s, you'll know what I mean. But our cup final? Really? I don't think Walsall have ever crossed my mind unless we play them, and they are the dirtiest team I've seen play this season!
