Southampton

It seems more like a snowball effect after they sold Lambert and Lallana: the others that have left don't appear to want to stick around in what will be a very average team next season. Although there is still time to bring some replacements in and I can't see Koeman not having some lined up. Things can change very quickly in football and if they announce four decent signings this week then the whole fear factor surrounding them lifts. The owner, Katherine Liebherr is a billionaire and the club is financially secure, so they have no need to cash in on their assets.

More about the players wanting to leave more than Southampton wanting to cash in by the looks of it

They've been terrific for 3 years, but once they went up and performed then this was always going to happen. Hope that they can invest the money wisely and keep improving, been a breath of fresh air in recent years

Liverpool now linked with Rodriguez; as my 'Pool supporting mate said this morning, "we should have just got Barca to pay for Suarez in Southampton vouchers..."

They have more to come through from the Academy, but it's the experience lost that's the issue. The Serbian (I think?) lad they signed from Dutch football is supposed to be talented and they've been linked with Leroy Fer from Norwich this morning. Lovren will be hard to replace, but it's not impossible. They just need to get on with it

They will be fine, Koeman is a good manager by all accounts and there are worse teams in the PL this season than them. What's more they will be bringing through more good quality young players once more such as Targett (mentioned above), Gallacher, Stephens and McQueen.

You wonder when the Southampton exodus is going to end.  But damn do they have some serious spending power now, they'll be able to revamp the squad with at least five top new players.  The sale of Shaw was tremendous for them, they'll be able to replace him from the academy or spend perhaps ten million to do the job, and still be in serious profit with that one.

The big problem they could face is breaking this sudden selling trend and making that first big purchase.  Unless they do that quickly, other players may be reluctant to join them, and then Schneiderlin, Rodrigues, perhaps Boruc and Ramirez, will be looking for the exit door.

You hope they can get the players in, and get them working together quickly  If they don't all that money isn't going to help, what could be a very tough season.

I would imagine Koeman has his eyes on some very affordable dutch talent though.

what is going on there,

IMO

They are going back from where they came can honestly see them back in league one in 2 years looks like the owner is cashing in

Typically it is sound financial management, they 'robbed' Liverpool as the reds had a hole burning in their pockets from Suarez, they will use the money to buy one or two and let their academy bring in some youth, again.

Very much "this". A good summary of the situ from Mr White.

Again. 6 points off them last time and don't think we conceded a goal. Can we play you every week, Saints?

Yep and they never lost a home game in 2011 until we turned up at St Mary's in their last home game that calendar year and against the odds won 1-0. Was ace

Perhaps they have a lot of confidence in the next generation that their terrific youth policy may produce?

We should have done this back in the 70's Alan Dicks built a great team that was founded around our youth policy, but then stifled the next generation by tying the first teamers to long term contracts. We should have cashed in on the Gerry Gow generation and brought through the next wave. Going to watch the reserves in those days was as entertaining as the first team, I think players like John Bain and others would have proved to have been even better than those they were trying to replace, but so many of them disappeared through lack of opportunities.

Of course in those days there were only one, then two subs allowed on the bench, so there were even fewer chances for youngsters. It did however seem that some players played no matter who fit (or not) they were.

They may have to bite the "Bullet" and pay over the odds for replacements.

On a serious note if suddenly they are buying in a raft of players does this mean the end of their amazing academy ?

Will the top youngsters have to look elsewhere for match time ?

Should i wear a white or blue shirt to work today ?

Can't blame them for selling their players, big clubs have come in with top money for them. That 90m will fund their accademy for years to come and as the past proves this crop of players isn't a one off. They will produce more quality youngsters. They actually still have a decent side (assuming the sale is over) and i will be suprised if they go down.
