You play the formation that best suits your players not what best suits the league. Who we sign in preseason will determine the formation. Play to the team strengths not to the formation fad of the day.

All I'll say is the last time we Went up we were top loyal to the team that got us up. When we needed to strengthen the depth of the squad we spaffed our budget on 1 player.

Let's keep to our age restriction on recruitment and look to add competition in the right areas - GK, DF and ST

To be fair to the team that got us up last time, they did get us danger-close to consecutive promotions.

Don't think this team needs many additions, though agree that adding a few younger players who can develop with us is the right way to go.

Really?

The reality is we signed seven players that summer.

Lansdown has already said that we'll live within our means so big signings are unlikely.

GK - with the emergency loan window 2 would be enough - No signing needed

DEF - With 5 center halfs at the club it'll depend on outgoings - I don't think we'll shed a tear if El Abd goes. So maybe 1 to come in.

Wing Backs - Tavs looks unlikely to stay so a right wingback is required.

Midfield - Saville will go back to Wolves but Reid will also come back to us he'll need a big preseason if he wants to stay near the 1st team. Will Elliott get another year? Maybe if so 1 signing needed.

Forwards - JET will he stay or go? Either way I think we'll get 2 forwards in. Personally I think if Symons remains as Fulham manager we've got a decent chance of getting Smith. Will Grigg would be my choice reminds me a bit of Baldock with his movement, that'll depend on Brentford's new manager though.

I can see 5 new signings & maybe 2/3 leave

It will work at the highest level..

..with good enough players of course....

I'm not so sure, how many top level teams do you see use our formation successfully?

One thing I will say is we need more depth, if we have a few injuries we would be very thin in terms of depth and we're going up a level.

Holland in the last World Cup, Watford got promoted with it. Formation is less important than personnel. If we have the players to play the formation effectively, there's no reason why it won't work.

Exactly.

Half the most successful sides in Europe play with bespoke formations to fit personnel; if our best players fit 352 then we'd be mad to change it because we've moved up a league.

Liverpool also use it I think, as do Man United

That, according to what has been said publicly at City, is not what happened last summer.

Cotterill, Burt and Dawe got together well before the end of last season and decided the shape of the team they would play this season.

Then they compiled a list of players that would fit with the formation and literally, head hunted those players.

The days at City when the manager tried to find a formation that suited the players are gone.

If we decide to change formation or not, those that we recruit will fit the pattern and not the other way round.

And also the type of person we sign will have to fit with the existing squad; a good team member, not a big time Charlie!

Absolutely this.

Would be surprised if we changed our formation next season.

I would t be surprised if we targeted Byrne from Swindon as replacement for tavernier, Bentley as competition for fielding and Wallace in replacement for Elliot. I think pack will sign new deal along with jet and Matt smith may be our marquee signing only due to us being required to pay a good sum to get him.

All speculation of course

I would be mystified if we changed formation. appreciate we need to have a plan B, but the players we have are so well suited to 352 it would be very odd

not many teams play it because there arent too many players around who are specialist wingbacks, whereas we seem to have 2 in Bryan and Little

also Williams and Ayling flank Flint brilliantly. Plus playing Freeman in the hole definitely gets the best out of him letting him drift around into pockets of space

im guessing we wont see too much in the way of personnel change this summer so it would be good to stick with the formation the players are best suited to
