F.a. Cup Final Day As Us Old People Remember It

Sad, eh? I could remember every final, the score etc going back to early 60s when I was a kid

First final I remember watching was United-Arsenal, 78 or 79 I guess? The sun was shining, watched it was my Dad and my brother, Dad was Spurs, so was supporting United, brother was Arsenal - I got bored with a couple of minutes to go and went and played a game of my own on the drive.....missed the late United equaliser, and the even later Arsenal winner. Didn't move a muscle on Cup Final day for the next 20 years or so!

First one I recall watching was Southampton Manchester United in 1976. Think I then watched every one until 1999 (United v Newcastle?) and could probably remember every team, score and possibly who got the winner. Now, for the recent years, like many others, I can't: as much to do with general indifference as anything else. I'll watch it if I am about, but if I miss it, so what.

That said, the 1991 cup final with Gazza's injury and Des Walker's own goal is one of my earliest football memories, along with Gazza's free kick v Arsenal in the semi.  "School boy's own stuff" as Barry Davies put it.

That cup final is one of my earliest FA Cup memories (although I remember Gazza's free kick - I think it was in the semi-final?) My earliest football memory is the 1990 World Cup though, I wasn't much of a football fan until then but got swept up with England doing so well.  Although always a City fan, years ago I could never understand people that didn't love international football but since 1990 (other than 1996) it has been nothing but misery as an international football fan and I barely bother with England anymore.. :grr:

Just dawned on me who played and the result:  I had bets on each of Arsenal and Hull to win on pens:  was in the money either way from what I recall.  Until that c0ck Ramsey popped up in ET.

cracking strike mind.

I was going to put a bet on arsenal to win thinking short odds but easy money, then decided I couldn't be arsed

Same thing happened to me , with 10 mins to go my mate knocked on the door and asked if I wanted a kick about has he said that the game was boring. I agreed and when I came back in 20 mins my old man told me I have just missed the best end to a game of football.

My mate from those days is s ST in the Dolman!!!

Talking about this this morning.

I remember watching the build up to the Man City v Spurs final in '81. They would always interview people in the grounds of the team hotel and I recall John Bond being interviewed. He said the players had all just had their breakfast "they all had scrambled eggs, except Gerry Gow, who had a raw steak and 6 inch nails"

This was the first final I remember watching. Used to love watching all the coverage in the build up.

I remember our 1909 FA Cup Final appearance.

I was a vibrant 15 years of age, pumped full of hormones, with a satchel-full of pre-war porn.

Them were the days.

Tough times mind. Even during the match several people were carted off in a wheelbarrow.

Consumption...

I think I met you at the match. Were you the scruffy kid with no shoes eating fagots and peas from a chamber pot? Those were the days!

I don't suppose you still have the pre-war porn collection by chance? Er, I collect artefacts from the pre-war period. Honest.

Les Kellett, the comedic wrestler, was always my favourite. He'd be knocked about so much that he looked like he was unconscious on his feet, then surprised his opponent with a counter-attack.
