If the contracts are not dated or predated surely there's a risk that some bigger club could come calling leaving the ,so say, new club with egg on it's face ?

always a risk, but doesn't generally happen that often, tho it does happen,

just think about the amount of players we've nicked off Blackpool in the last minute for example

The transfer window doesn't open until 1st July and player contracts expire at the end of June. But, as there are no fixtures now, the window is effectively open already. No difference in a player signing now or in mid-July. Official paperwork and contracts go through on the 1st July though.

None of the players that are 'signed' will be officially signed until July 1st will they? Therefore any action against The Hoops before that date should preclude the supposed 'signed' players, surely.

I believe you're right, or the answer to your questions is yes...

They can agree as many deals as they want now, but they will be thrown out if they're placed under a transfer embargo or similar sanction before July 1st.

There are two issues

1 Player registration. Players can not be transferred and able to play for a new club if the FA will not register them. Thus the transfer window is actually a registration window

2 Contracts. You can have a contract to play and sign it. Once it is signed you are bound and it is illegal to sign a contract with the intent to break it. Therefore a player can have a contract with a club but if he is not registered he cant actually play.

This. Players in England can sign a deal with another club within a month of their contract expiring so long as it starts after their current deal expires.
