Miami & The Keys

Heading to Miami over New Year. Massively excited as it's one of a couple of cities in America I've always wanted to go to but haven't been (the other being Chicago).

Has anyone been and if so do you have any tips/recommendations? Particularly interested in best part of town to stay, South Beach is not an option as the prices in holiday season are extortionate.

Got 11 days so also want to head to the Everglades and then a quick road trip along the Keys.

Any help mucho appreciated.

My number one tip......use a satnav. You can get easily lost in Miami (I did). Ifd your using your phone's satnav, check it has everything downloaded while you have wifi (I didnt).

I like to scuba and we stayed in Islamorada once, which was great. Lovely warm sea. Key West was totally clogged up with people when we ventured there and was a bit of a disappointment.

Don't forget to venture to Everglades National Park as you make your way down to the Keys.

I've been a couple of times, Miami is great but if I were you id get off the Atlantic Coast and move your way down the Gulf coast, the towns, beaches and atmosphere is stunning and really laid back. Beaches and towns like Venice, sharkstooth beach are Caribbean like, you wont find that on the Atlantic coast, I tried and was hugely disappointed.

Don't forget to spend a day in the everglades on your way down to the keys. I spent 2 weeks driving down through the keys the archipelago is breathtaking, take your time and enjoy the tranquility as key west, the end of most peoples journeys is commercialised, touristy but still charming, the real gems are the more tranquil islands-no question. Ps don't miss the sunsets. I stayed in little Havana Miami, a bit grity gor some but lovely people and more interesting than some of the more traditional areas. People are generally very friendly especially on the gulf coast where everythings more chilled & arty, I did have a bit of bother when I ended up taking the bus through liberty city and into a Haitian refugee camp!
