I really rate this guy but not as a wing back.

He seems incapable of going forward, seems terrified when he gets the ball so almost always passes back when it seems easier to take on his man. He gets into some great positions yet his team mates don't utilise him as they'd only get the play going backwards.

If Joe Bryan can't get back to his usual then this is a position we need to address in the transfer window.

Agree generally - tho he put in a cross for Wilbs second goal against Florist that any International winger would have been proud of.

Feel for the guy a bit - wing back is a very specialised role, takes extreme athleticism , fitnes and takes anyone a fair time to learn

Bearing that in mind he's not done too bad and respect to him - wasn't he a centre back when he came to us

Do think if we are gonna carry on with wing backs both need to be very good in that position - would actually be one of my priority positions to spend on to get the best ones we can

One of the poorest players I've ever seen with the ball.

You've obviously never seen a Matt Hill lump up the line then!

He's no world beater but there's been a hell of a lot worse down the gate in the past twenty years!

He does produce the odd decent cross with a pretty good left foot but he isn't a wide player by any stretch of the imagination (wrong instincts, can't beat a player, passing not sufficient for the role) and playing him in there with Bryan on the bench is a mistake and has been since it started.  Bryan was a bit out of form but mostly due to being asked to be too cautious so starting with the ball further back, and enjoying less possession.  It would be a reason to give him real competition (like say, Cunningham!) but not to play a makeshift centre half there.

I'd say it was the opposite - he was too eager to get forward and was being caught out defensively. He was the main source of our vulnerability to the counter attack. Williams came in and was much more solid and that was what was needed at the time.

Recently Bryan's had a couple of appearances and cameos off the bench where's he's looked pretty good, including a pinpoint first time ball for the assist today. Against Charlton in a game that's so important to get a win, I'd look to attack and bring him back in

Defensively he is far better than Bryan and makes us more solid but Bryan is far better in the attacking side.

That's it in a nutshell- if we could blend the two into one - we'd have a star. Problem is that even with Derek's defensive capabilities its not enough and we  still need to score more goals . If you have a malfunction on the left side then it just makes it so much harder to create opportunities.

He Gets in good positions and then tends to run out of ideas. Quite frustrating to watch him sometimes. Bryan looked far more effective going forward when he came on,

Our problem is he ain't a wing back, and neither is Joe Bryan. When Bryan plays we're wide open at the back (see earlier games of the season) because of his more adventurous attacking tendencies. When Williams plays we looks far more solid defensively, but he's so cautious/lacking confidence going forward. I don't think the formation suits either player. Whereas Cunningham..............
