Marina's Rolls Royce
I really rate this guy but not as a wing back. He seems incapable of going forward, seems terrified when he gets the ball so almost always passes back when it seems easier to take on his man. He gets into some great positions yet his team mates don't utilise him as they'd only get the play going backwards. If Joe Bryan can't get back to his usual then this is a position we need to address in the transfer window.
nickolas
Not convinced hes fit. Looks like hes running through glue sometimes. Never been the best with the ball so this position probably doesnt suit him but it does make the team more solid as JB isnt as good defensively. Agree generally - tho he put in a cross for Wilbs second goal against Florist that any International winger would have been proud of. Feel for the guy a bit - wing back is a very specialised role, takes extreme athleticism , fitnes and takes anyone a fair time to learn Bearing that in mind he's not done too bad and respect to him - wasn't he a centre back when he came to us Do think if we are gonna carry on with wing backs both need to be very good in that position - would actually be one of my priority positions to spend on to get the best ones we can
mcbcfc
I don't think he's that bad there, he needs to back his ability too often he gets to the half way line stops & turns around. Put the opposition full back on back foot once in a while!
HoldenBall
One of the poorest players I've ever seen with the ball.
Shtanley
I think after this season Bryan and Williams will be sound down the left hand side as a pair. Possibly be looking at a left footed CB in the summer.
Super
Defensively he is far better than Bryan and makes us more solid but Bryan is far better in the attacking side.

You've obviously never seen a Matt Hill lump up the line then! He's no world beater but there's been a hell of a lot worse down the gate in the past twenty years! Nibor
He does produce the odd decent cross with a pretty good left foot but he isn't a wide player by any stretch of the imagination (wrong instincts, can't beat a player, passing not sufficient for the role) and playing him in there with Bryan on the bench is a mistake and has been since it started. Bryan was a bit out of form but mostly due to being asked to be too cautious so starting with the ball further back, and enjoying less possession. It would be a reason to give him real competition (like say, Cunningham!) but not to play a makeshift centre half there.
BCFC Jordan
Think he's done an admirable job in a difficult position for a natural CB. Has certainly shored us up defensively in that position. I do hope Joe can get back to his best form and offer us a more attacking option for home matches at least, but Del has done a good job. I'd say it was the opposite - he was too eager to get forward and was being caught out defensively. He was the main source of our vulnerability to the counter attack. Williams came in and was much more solid and that was what was needed at the time. Recently Bryan's had a couple of appearances and cameos off the bench where's he's looked pretty good, including a pinpoint first time ball for the assist today. Against Charlton in a game that's so important to get a win, I'd look to attack and bring him back in

That's it in a nutshell- if we could blend the two into one - we'd have a star. Problem is that even with Derek's defensive capabilities its not enough and we still need to score more goals . If you have a malfunction on the left side then it just makes it so much harder to create opportunities.
Davefevs
I think unless Joe comes totally back to the form of last year at this level, then I think Cotts should pick them horses for courses. That's likely to be Bryan at home Williams away (or when you've got someone like Phillips up against you)
BRISTOL86
Decent enough player, but wing back he ain't.

Quite frustrating to watch him sometimes. Bryan looked far more effective going forward when he came on,
italian dave
Our problem is he ain't a wing back, and neither is Joe Bryan. When Bryan plays we're wide open at the back (see earlier games of the season) because of his more adventurous attacking tendencies. When Williams plays we looks far more solid defensively, but he's so cautious/lacking confidence going forward. I don't think the formation suits either player. Whereas Cunningham.............. Between heaven and hell
It would be so easy to change the system to accommodate both. 4-4-2 Williams left back and Joe left mid, drop freeman with Wilbs and Big John up top. Although the chance of another change is pretty slim me thinks.
