Only half a bedroom?  I knew the housing market was tough but Christ...

Yep.

It's tough out there since Blair and Brown f&@&d the social housing system.

Perhaps when Jezza gets up off the train floor and stops making false claims about public transport he will actually 'do something' about it.

Actually, Thatcher messed it up with the right to buy scheme.

Brilliant for long standing tenants who wanted to buy their home.

But she ballsed it up by miscalculating the sheer numbers who took it up and then not replacing the housing stock.

People who have evaporated leaving all those houses now empty. (D'oh!) At least Thatcher gave a lot of council tenants in Bristol a better and more secure retirement than they would have ever got under Labour.

The basic problem with housing is that we don't build enough, simple as that. The combined effects of people living longer, increased net migration and people living in smaller households have seen to that.

Relax planning laws, incentivising building through tax breaks, public investment are all part of the answer. Think doing something about the buy to let bubble would also be a good thing - capital growth and high rental incomes seem too much of a reward for inflating the housing market through liitle effort.

As for allocating blame to politicians think both major parties have been very poor over the years...
