Las vegas. Must do's and must avoids

Gday folks.

Me and Mrs batman have decided to go to Vegas. I know some people who have been and said how good it is, but it gets a bit dull after a while if you spend too long there. That seems to be a common trend amongst people I've asked.

Is there anything within the city that you'd highly recommend to do and highly recommend to leave well alone.

Will also be doing helicopter tour over grand canyon because by all accounts, it's beyond phenomenal.

Cheers all.

Would highly recommend Pink Jeep Tours, who operate from Vegas. We did a guided tour for whole day with a very early start which included a drive through the Joshua Tree dessert, a flight around the canyon and a boat trip down the Colorado and taking in the Hoover Boulder Dam in the way back. Also, if you can get to Death Valley, which is 2-3 hours away, do it - absolutely amazing.

Shows are a big deal - wife didn't want to see Rod Stewart at Caersar's Palace so instead got dragged to Cirque du Soleil's production of Love. Never been so bored in my life and I've been to the Mem once with my father in law.

Dining is World class and breakfast is an event, our favourite being Paris, complete with it's own Eiffel Tower.

You will end up spending a day walking up the main street exploring the theme hotels. They are unbelievable - Venice, for example, has canals, gondoliers and a rainstorm all inside. The Belagio has an amazing fountain display every hour. Make sure to get a monorail ticket as a day's walking can be knackering. (A mistake we made).

For no advice re gambling except keep an eye on yourself - it would be very easy to lose a stack in Vegas.

All that said, it's one of my favourite places and I really didn't expect it to be. Simply unbelievable.

Finally, and it might be too late for this, hotel rates are a lot cheaper on week days than weekends, when loads of Yanks fly in.

Ps: You will need to get a Visa Waiver before you go. You can do this direct with the American Government esta website rather than pay through the nose through some agent web site. Just Google Visa Waiver for $14 - easy peasy...

Think the lions have gone from MGM lobby these days.

Definitely worrh a day or two strolling up and down the main strip checking out the casinos with features like bellagio, treasure island, mirage, Venetian etc.

If you want to learn how to play craps without getting taught and expensive lesson, some casinos do a free tutorial in the mornings. I think New York New York do one around 11ish.

If you play golf, there is an interesting course a bit away from the strip:  http://www.royallinksgolfclub.com/welcome-to-royal-links/

every hole has been modelled, or at least inspired, by one on an Open rotation course.

There is also an interesting take on caddies too http://www.waltersgolf.com/player-services/par-mates-female-caddies/

As Calculus noted, Death Valley is worth a trek.

Not done it myself, but my wife recommended the helicopter trip to the Grand Canyon.  I drove out with friends, and it was a drag.

Funny old place Vegas:  personally I only can deal with it for a few days, then it just gets too much.

Thanks all. We are planning 2 years ahead so bags of time to correlate all the ideas and also plenty of time to save for things to do out there. Want to give it a proper go as I don't foresee us going that far west in the USA again

It does appear apparent that nobody enjoys spending more than 5 days out there so I think that would be the perfect length to go.

The gambling element, I used to gamble after nights out, but never lost control, I appreciate it's a whole new world over there, but I know when to stop. I won't be taking the house deeds with me.

I looked on trip advisor but there was so much to look at, hence why I came on here.

there are also quite a few hotels that have rooftop bars that give great views of the strip. I forget which ones are best but you could do a google nearer the time. Good way to get a good photo of strip all lit up at night without having to do one of the helicopter flyovers.

i took a plane ride over the Grand Canyon and Hoover dam as it was about half price of the chopper. The windows were customised so they were really big and flat and views were great. I have heard people say chopper is even better though, especially if you can afford one of the packages where it lands in the canyon so you can get out and walk around (and maybe even do some kayaking / rafting?)

Not sure if it is operating under a different name, or even open at all, but the old Playboy Club at the top of the Palms had a spectacular view of the strip from the outdoor terrace.

Avoid the BigTone show - the one about endless anecdotes, one-liners. You won't last 5 minutes in there.

His Elvis impersonations, on the other hand are first rate. He's the spitting image of Elvis in the last 6 months of his life. Go and see this before its too late.

Every time I think that I'm getting old, and gradually going to the grave, something else happens.
