You might be shocked to discover so many of Bristol's restaurants and takeaways have failed to meet basic hygiene requirements and have a zero rating.

There are 18 businesses who received the lowest grading in the Food Standards Agency's (FSA) national food hygiene rating scheme after inspectors paid a visit.

The FSA scale goes from zero to five, with venues receiving five deemed as the safest, cleanest and the best.

Inspectors from the council assess the premises, looking at the handling, preparation, cooking and storage of food.

Health and safety officers also check the cleanliness and condition of the building to make sure it is safe for customers.

A zero rating doesn't always mean that a restaurant or takeaway is unhygienic in some instances it can be something as simple as a paperwork problem.

Food businesses do not have to show their rating, but all of the information is published on the FSA website. Here are the Bristol restaurants and takeaways with zero ratings and the dates they were inspected.

The Bristol Post contacted all of the following eateries for comment.

So just how is a hygiene rating worked out?

A food safety officer inspects a business to check that it meets the requirements of food hygiene law. The officer is from the local authority where the business is located.

At the inspection, the officer will check:

  • How hygienically the food is handled – how it is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored
  • The condition of the structure of the buildings – the cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and other facilities
  • How the business manages what it does to make sure food is safe and so that the officer can be confident standards will be maintained in the future

Each of these three elements is essential for making sure that food hygiene standards meet requirements and the food served or sold to you is safe to eat.

What does a getting '0' mean?

The hygiene standards found at the time of inspection are rated on a scale.

At the bottom of the scale is '0' – this means urgent improvement is required.

At the top of the scale is '5' – this means the hygiene standards are very good.

If the top rating is not given, the officer will explain to the person who owns or manages the business what improvements need to be made and what action they can take to improve their hygiene rating.

A statement on the FSA website says: "The food hygiene rating or inspection result given to a business reflects the standards of food hygiene found on the date of inspection or visit by the local authority. The food hygiene rating is not a guide to food quality."

I don't actually like these articles that much. You can get a zero for having an incorrect piece of paperwork and be nothing to do with the actual hygiene... maybe the BP should then do follow up ratings to see if they've improved. Those that haven't fair enough..

Can we get 0-5 ratings on local and national newspapers?

As I said previously. You can have an immaculate kitchen but one incorrect document/paperwork or something like a tap not working = 0 stars

Bit pointless having mezze at the white lion on that NS list!

Talking of takeaways...went to Fishminster on North St last week and had hands down the worst fish and chips I've ever had. The fish was actually inedible (hard and chewy) and the batter was a soggy thin layer that tasted of grease.

When did this place take such a turn for the worse? New owners?

No idea, but that's pretty gutting. Not been there for maybe a couple of years but it used to be really good.

Ironically a social club I am involved with in WSM got named on a similar list over the weekend.

I was told if you have any paperwork not up to date, the maximum you can get is 1 star !

Ironically they marked us down as a sink basin in a toilet no where near the kitchen had a crack in it ????

Absolutely, it used to be great (slow service aside). Went up Clifton Village Fish Bar a few weeks ago and had the battered sea bass - inspirational. So will be using that until further notice unless I hear Fishminster improves.

I think it changed hands a few years ago. Might be wrong but certainly lost its ethos of what it started out with.

The queue outside the Chinese for chips pre match tells you all you need to know. Really crying out for a good chippy on NS right now.

A few years ago after a game we (son, granddaughter & me) went there for the first time.. Loved it and we all rated it as one of the best chippies around... Went back some time later and never been so disappointed - it was awful. Gotta be different owners or else can't imagine where it all went wrong ..one of the worst around now judged by our latest (& no doubt last ever) experience there for us ...What a shame..
