That in 1936 Joe Payne of Luton Town set the record for the highest number of goals scored by one player in an English League game at ten!

And his main position was a wing half; he was only playing at centre forward owing to injuries to other players.

Astounding.  Take a bow Joe.

Why the hell did Luton loan him to Biggleswade Town, with a record like that!?!

What nobody has mentioned is that the four goal hero for Spurs was a product of Bristol City but the highest he got with us was as a non playing sub the previous season against West Ham (in the days of one substitute). He was then sold for peanuts to Torquay. We were short of a good goalscorer when he notched those four on debut v Rovers and the following month got Royle on loan from Man City, who then notched four on his debut for us!
