Reason behind leaving an opposing winger free?

Something that has been bugging me for ages is why we always seem to leave an opposition winger wide open, nearly always the left winger.

It must surely be a tactic because it doesn't matter who plays as right back it always seems to be the same. The Newcastle game was one of the worst for it when Ritchie was pinging balls across one side to the other with ease and I'm pretty sure led to Matthews hamstring injury from having to scurry back over so much.

Today was the same. At one point Little was marking Murray pretty much central to goal while we were all bunched across leaving their number 15 standing alone down the wing.

Whichever side we tried to attack Brighton down today their left or right back was always there in position.

Does anyone know of a tactical reason for this as like I said it doesn't seem to matter who plays in that position so this isn't a post to slag off any player.
