Dear old Auntie Virus

and I do mean DEAR.

I use Bullguard anti-virus to protect 3 PCs - I normally do a 3 year stint.

Renewal has just come through and it is £99 but with discount as a current user comes down to £75 = seems a lot of money - anyone know of better value options?

Cheers

If your running Windows 7 or 8 or 8.1 or Windows 10 use Microsofts own anti-virus called Security essentials in Windows 7 and Windows Defender in Windows 10.  It comes already  installed with Windows 10

Free and good just stay away from dodgy websites. Avast free is good also.

Windows standard stuff is more than adequate as long as you aren't being stupid and clicking ad links on dodgy sites.

That`s all I use and never had any issues. In fact, I`ve found in the past that if you install MacAfee or similar it`s a pain as it decides that something`s `unsafe` and won`t let you access it (proper sites, not porn - I know what you`re all thinking!). Their pop-up blocker is a bloody nuisance too as it won`t let you override it and a lot of my work stuff includes pop-up drop down address lists and things.

If you are going to go for a paid one I would highly recommend eset nod32.  Doesn't bury itself deep into the OS and slow things down.

like others say Be sensible with attachments and browsing and you can generally be safe unless a safe website has been hacked. Personally stay away from the free stuff on my main PC as the adverts you invariably get annoy the hell out of me,but to be fair they are pretty good at what they do,but some are a bit intrusive.  Say clear of McAfee, once its on its a bitch fully getting of.

Yep just use the windows built in stuff these days for antivirus.  Use half a brain and don't download and run applications unless they're from trusted sources.

If you want a bit more privacy and safety on the internet it's worth learning how to work your browser.  Specifically, disabling all cookies and only enabling them for specific sites, and using a browser plugin like ublock origin that allows you to control which scripts run and block trackers etc.

It takes a bit of learning but it's astounding just how much shite some websites ask your browser to load from third parties who are far from trustworthy.
