Just watched the first half of Ajax v Heracles at the Amsterdam Arena and think this chap, who we had on trial last summer, might well be one that we regret not offering a deal.

He has scored (his twelfth league goal in 19 games) and looks a very decent player, all left footed and has barely given the ball away.

Not the tallest, (though his goal was a good header), not the quickest, either but those goal stats and his general game suggest to me than when contrasted with the million plus we spent on Engvall we could have had someone at least as effective for nothing.

Should ask our friends at Willem II what they made of him as he scored 11 goals in 29 league games for them season before last in Eredivisie. Sounds a pretty good ratio at that level.

But at the age of 28 was definitely one for here and now rather than for the future, and if the Tammy deal was already done, you can see the reason for not going for him.

Alfonso Alves had 40 goals in 35 games for Hereveen before joining Boro 8 years ago, scored a hat trick v Man City and did nothing else, the Dutch League is pretty poor quality

For every Alves there is a Suarez.

It's a bit difficult to say how effective Engvail is or isn't when he's only played a hand full of times

Waste of time and money-....panic buy gone wrong.

All the guy wants above all else is to be 'at home' in sweden....a pity but all clubs buy a duffer from time to time-no problem, its what we paid(and the agent fees)that grind a little....

If your happier to keep the 'rose tinted' handy then fair enough-he hasn't seen action for a reason/s..attitude being one.

So much for all the 'DNA' bollo.

True but I think suarez is an exception as he is a world class player

All those rubbish Dutch players like Cruyff, Vsn Basten, Gullit, Bergkamp, Van Persie, Robben?! Plus a good record for spotting talent amongst overseas players like Ronaldo, Romario, Suarez, Gudjohnsen, Christian Eriksen etc.  Plus 3 Dutch clubs have won the European Cup on a total of 6 occasions. Not exactly the equivalent of the SPL, although I take the point that it's been less strong more recently and there's a big gap between top and bottom in terms of ability.

we are talking about the current state of the dutch league not what it was, wasn't their last champions league 94/95? and UEFA 2001?

Since the last got to a final, Fulham and middlesborough have got to a final says it all really

Fair point although I did say it wasn't what it was. However still s good place to look for young overseas talent, compared to the SPL where clubs tend to recruit those older players who no-one else wants.

the dutch league is just about on par with the SPL

Can't agree with that Monkeh.

Would Celtic dick PSV Ajax and Feyenoord home and away ?

Gates are much bigger too and not just the big three.

Agree that scoring 20 goals a season there doesn't mean a great deal but some great players come out of that league whereas SPL...

It's easy to say how effective Engvall is. He's in Sweden and we had a 37 year old centre forward doing 90 minutes on Saturday.

No, we didn't.

We could only go on what LJ said.

"He is a Swedish international with excellent finishing ability. I'm sure he'll adjust quickly to the pace and tempo of the Championship, and when he does he'll be really dangerous."

http://www.bcfc.co.uk/news/article/2016-17/city-secure-engvall-transfer-3281091.aspx

An excellent finisher, who LJ was certain would adjust quickly and be really dangerous at this level.

That's not 'one for the future' in terms of in a season or two, that's someone we were led to expect needed only a short settling in period before going out and really making his mark at City.

Not really a comparison to make, there is a fair few years between them & Engvall was always brought with the next couple of years in mind, Armenteros would of been for the here & now.

I'm not sure if Lee Johnson was on the same page as you on August 31st.
