Malago Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 Starring down the barrel. 6th out of 10 in the S American section. The top 4 qualify with 5th place going into a playoff. Play their final game tonight away to Ecuador up in Quito. Need to win and hope other results go their way. They've had little time to acclimatise and are one draw and two defeats from their last three games in the Andean capital. They might still reach Russia but the odds are stacked against them.
Bristol Rob Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 The odds might be stacked against them, but they are still a shorter price to lift the trophy than England are. Amazingly.
Bar BS3 Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 Not really. Peru are playing Columbia, so as long as the Argies beat Ecuador, then they will at least qualify for the play off and can still qualify automatically.

At altitude against a side they have won only once against away in something like 40 years! This is something of a bogey fixture for them.

Mr Popodopolous Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 Altitude or not, I suspect they will make it. They usually do. Just look at their side FFS... Up the top and midfield especially: Messi, Dybala, Icardi, Di Maria and further back Mascherano...also Higuain, Aguero injured and Pastore not in squad. Then good 2nd tier next level down players like Paredes (a very technically good midfielder), Banega (another gifted one), Gomez (shining with Atalanta indeed helped run Everton ragged). Bound to make it, their depth in attack and parts of midfield is stupid.

LondonBristolian Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 It is amazing they are in this position given the players they have but nonetheless Ecuador are on a losing streak and I reckon they will ultimately make it. Very much hope Colombia make it through.

One Team In Keynsham Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 Boom. Not quite the start they planned.
One Team In Keynsham Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 Brilliant move for Messi to equalise.
One Team In Keynsham Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 Messi is certainly fired up for this.
One Team In Keynsham Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 And there he goes again. He is sublime at present.
One Team In Keynsham Posted October 11, 2017 Posted October 11, 2017 Given the way they are playing tonight how the F did they end up in this position at the end of qualifying?
One Team In Keynsham Posted October 11, 2017 Posted October 11, 2017 And there's his 3rd. Another brilliant chance carved out and finish.
North London Red Posted October 11, 2017 Posted October 11, 2017 So...now two of the best teams from the last World Cup (Holland and Chile) are out and as things stand at the time of writing, it's looking like Australia v USA in the play offs (although there's still time to play in the final round of CONCACAF games, so that could still change).
North London Red Posted October 11, 2017 Posted October 11, 2017 Now the USA join the list of high profile countries who haven't qualified, Panama have made it in for the first time, and it's Honduras v Australia in the play offs. The USA's failure is a disaster for tournament organisers or those selling TV rights, advertising or corporate packages! There were loads of American fans in both South Africa and Brazil...in fact I think the US were one of the best supported teams in both tournaments.

Yes, I remember there being loads in Rustenberg at the England v USA game (Rob Green's nightmare match) and also crossing paths with loads more for the remainder of the time I spent in South Africa. Brazil was a similar story and made all the more impressive by the fact that US passport holders had to apply for Brazilian visas before travel, unlike most fans from European countries. I didn't quite cross paths with as many as in South Africa as the Americans arrived in Manaus a day or two after we left, but I'm aware loads travelled.

Kingswoodactor Posted October 11, 2017 Posted October 11, 2017 Germany, Brazil & France the 3 favorites you'd think? Argentina & Spain will be in the mix I imagine, Belgium always have high hopes but usually crumble. Italy will probably scrape through their play offs to qualify, but then will do well in the tournament like they always do. England to scrape through a poor group in 2nd place on 5 points, win a last 16 tie 1-0 against one of the African nations through pure luck and a set piece, before crashing out to a decent outfit in the quarters. Am I missing anything?!

Personally, I've given up on waiting for England to surprise us but wait for the media to 'big' them up as the tournament approaches because we'll probably draw with Germany's reserves in a friendly. I genuinely don't think we've got any world class players at the moment, not one.

Alli still has a chance of becoming a very special player, but his form this season has been poor and he still has work to do on his temperament and 'game head'. The rest seem to play well for their clubs but offer very little for the national team. But Southgate though.... Surely that doesn't help

In terms of markets, especially in relation to the FIFA game, the US is a huge consumer. Without the USA in the World Cup, loads of US companies will pull their adverts, fans won't buy the games or the kits, and FIFA will lose a ton of money.

Having had to suffer US coverage of recent World Cups, I would note that the broadcasters have started to embrace the tournament as a whole, and show some, if not all, games, as compared to NBC's coverage of the Olympics where if an American is not competing, the particular discipline doesn't really exist. In addition, there is a sizeable [insert other country]-American market that WILL be watching regardless if the USA are not playing. I.e., I can't imagine they will pull their advertising en masse.
