Southampton have accepted a world record £75m bid from Liverpool for defender Virgil van Dijk.

The Netherlands international had been expected to join the Reds last summer after he handed in a transfer request.

But a move fell through when Liverpool apologised for making an alleged illegal approach for the 26-year-old.

The fee would be the most ever paid for a defender - Manchester City set a record when they paid £52m for Monaco's Benjamin Mendy in July.

How can you justify paying £75mil for a bloody centre back?!

If Coutinho goes to Barca in due course they'll get north of £120m, which makes it affordable.

Makes you wonder if a deal has been agreed with Barcelona. Didn't Tottenham start splashing cash before Bale left? Same as Everton who were spending big in the summer before Lukaku left.

Madness not worth half that. Football has gone completely mad.. saints may come In for flint. Can have him for 30 million. What a joke.

The market determines a player's value. Our opinion of what any given player is worth is neither here nor there.

I suspect it has and they have told Coutinho he can go next summer. Man Utd did as much with Ronaldo so got an extra year out of him.

To be fair our opinion on every subject is neither here or there but this is a forum where opinions are to be shared and things debated - I think we all know the market has determined - this is more about the lunacy of it as it is ridiculous- one ok defender worth more than most entire championship teams - firking madness !!

And no market is as well resourced and inflated as the EPL. John Stones worth was decided by that market.  And so on to the next ...

Exactly. Always amazes me how many fail to grasp this concept.

Of course. But its the steady rise year in year out that we now see that is staggering and quite rightly making joe public question it..Can prices continue to rise? There is seemingly only so much that the tv companys can pump into the game before even that money cannot cover these types of transfers..
