I tend to think it was. I always remember City being in debt to the tune of half a million pounds throughout the 1970s, a lot back then...it is still quite considerable to some of us now. I don't think the Garland money made that much of a difference, especially as we bought him back for about the same fee a few years later.

It was due to this debt that we never spent big in our top flight days and no doubt had a bearing on Dicks and the board tying the players to exceptionally long term contracts, which added massively to the debt as we started our plummet down the league. So, I would say that it was the catalyst for what eventually happened.

I always remember that whenever I asked, as a kid in the 70s, why City were in so much debt, I was told it was due to the Dolman Stand being built.
