RUSSEL85
I have just read the below article on BBC, its a good insight but also quite frightening. Worth a read. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcthree/article/a35b72fb-6035-4ccc-90bc-f2a93c4d3671
Leveller
It makes you wonder whether clubs should force youngsters into spending their non training time in some sort of education, so they don’t need to find a vice to fill the afternoons. TMWANG50
A horrifying read. Education is definitely missing surely some sort of studying in the afternoon even if its just to raise awareness of this etc. I think kids in general have limited financial management skills and something schools seem to totally overlook. Failing that is their a PE type qualification they could study or even a pre coaching badge to at least engage the youngsters with something similar to football? Too much spare time seems to be the biggest issue in this particular case rather than the amount he was earning although there was talk of a footballers style ISA where some of their earnings at a young age would be kept to the side for later life by the PFA not sure how far away that is in reality though. TV Tom
It’s always been the case that young footballers have too much time on their hands after training, I remember seeing City players in the Paragon snooker club on North Street when I was a lad back in the ‘70s
iamalagerdrinker
It's a grip for anyone really. It's so easy to be sat in the pub with your mates and gamble away £50 on a few £5 horse races thinking it's nothing till you see your bank account the next day! downendcity
Remember reading about Matthew Etheringtoni's gambling problems - he got through £1.5m! Again ME said that it was a combination of to much time and too much money available. He would sometimes lose his weekly wage ( about £20k!) during the coach journey to an away game playing poker with teammates.
!james
Keith Gillespie's book is very eye opening - lost over £7 million gambling over his career and got as bad as over £100k a day at one stage. Lots of examples out there
