Hull referee - question for qualified referees

The players put the ref in a difficult situation. If he plays on and the player is seriously injured the he will be criticised for failing in his care of duty. If he stops the game and the player just gets up he's criticised for stop play by the opposition.

The rules have to help stop the faining of injury, what about, unless it's caused by a foul, the player who causes play to be stopped must go off for 5 mins recovery that way you would only go down if you were injured. Or restart play with the team that had the ball rather than the opposition kicking it out.

Both of these things.

The governing bodies want refs. to put a stop to this but the refs. are in a difficult position as pressure is on them to err on the side of caution. So although the first idea might seem quite drastic something along those lines is the way forward imo.

Your 2nd point should be automatic, it's currently a ridiculous state of affairs.

On a different point from last night but a law related question, prior to a corner being taken fairly late in the second half, a City player was held back by his shirt in the penalty box (and in front of the referee), and this caused him to go down but can a penalty be awarded before the ball is back in play i.e. before the corner had been taken?

Not that he would give it anyway as it was ten foot or so directly in front of him!!

Biggest bunch of timewasters seen for ages. Loved how they were desperate to hurry things up after they conceded.

Depends how you define "ages"

Warnock's Rotherham and Clough's Burton aided and abetted by the ref on the day, were class acts the pair of 'em.

Funnily enough, the mighty Boro are experts in this field too. I wonder why this is

You answered your own question the ball was not in play so penalty can not be awarded.

I don't blame the referee in these scenarios.  If a player goes down pointing to his leg, how can he be expected to know instantly whether he's just broken his leg in four places, or chipped a toe nail.  If it was our player, it turned out to be serious, and the referee had let play continue, imagine the grief he would have got.

It's the players responsibility to react in a way that is proportionate to the injury so the referee can more reliably make the right decision.  In other words, if you can get up, get up.

The overreaction to injuries is one of the most common complaints of non-football fans, and it's difficult to argue against at times, because it is indeed an embarassment for the game.

In this instance though the player was just sat upright on the pitch, no sign of serious or any injury for that matter, blatant time wasting/cheating, sooner the Ref’s and authorities start acting on this the better.
