The only other routes are coaching and media otherwise and there are only so many spots to do that, whereas I imagine the pool of referees around the country could do with a boost. Interesting to see it takes non-players about 16-20 years to make it to the top though, and there's a body fat limit too. Never thought about that being an actual stated requirement. Not only that they'll all give up within 5 years because they will be doing grass roots football on a crappy pitch no showers etc and they wont like that.
