cidered abroad
One of the great goalkeepers of my lifetime has died aged 87. A hero at Munich as he pulled survivors out of the plane with the Man U coming back from a European Cup game. My best memory was with Doncaster Rovers at Ashton Gate. John Atyeo strode past Charlie Williams, later to be a top comedian, and hammered from thirty yards, an unstoppable shot past Gregg. Harry stood there and clapped Atyeo. A top footballer and a top person. RIP and thanks for the memories.
Erithacus
One of my old man's favourites in the sticks and a sad day for those involved. Gregg was a quiet and understated man, who was not only one of the best 'keepers in the side's history (or his nation's come to that), he will inevitably be linked with his actions on that fateful flight. There is a worthy video on YouTube by the incomparable journalist Hugh McIlvanney:
harvey54
A very touching and sad documentary. Under 'hero' in the dictionary it should say 'see Harry Gregg'. RIP Big man.
Lanterne Rouge
He was before my time - Alex Stepney had taken over - but I`ve heard a few interviews today. He seemed a very humble man who just did what he had to do at the time - he never thought of himself as any sort of hero even though he clearly was. Erithacus
Although he spoke clearly and humbly about the crash, he would have given back all his caps and medals to have his teammates back. He was the definition of a reluctant hero. I get the impression that, despite the tales he related, there are memories that he never mentioned to anyone, and has taken them dolefully to his grave.
