Although I think you are forgetting the increase in wages associated with promotion to this level.

It’s a common misconception. But Accrington FC (a separate club and cross town rivals of Stanley) were founder members of the football league.

I did know that, which is why I sort of qualified my statement, but actually Accrington FC and Accrington Stanley were only rivals for 5 years, and Stanley was formed as a breakaway club from the original Accrington with many of their players and directors. So I bent the truth a bit, but in a way Stanley (again, it's a new club now. The  one formed in Victorian times went bust in 1966) were the descendants of that founder club.
