Given he has never been a director of football and never shown any interest in the role, why would he want it? And why would we want a director of football with no background in the job who would rather be doing a different job instead?

A director of football role is a specialist role with a specialist skillset. It is not somewhere you park a spare manager and hope for the best.

Agreed. My comment had a considerable amount of tongue in cheek.

I guess at his age he doesn't want to commit to a 2/3 year "project" where he'd have to get them back up, keep them there and put foundations in to benefit them after he's gone. He hasn't done a job like that for a long time now.

Yep, a very different job planning for the future, foundations in place and long term strategy. He seems happy to come in, organise , maybe a few short term loans/signings and off. Worked well for him until this year, first relegation wasn't it.
