Have thought about this before but last night it confirmed my theory.

In International tournaments have your 3rd choice keeper a specialist penalty saver and bring him on in the 118th minute

The Italian was 6'5" and looked like he was going to save every penalty, his presence more they anything forced those misses IMO.

You could have a (lower league even) giant keeper who is then intensively drilled in facing penalties.

He would be far more likely to be used and useful in a shoot out than actually needing to play after 2 keeper injuries.

I suggested an idea like this although mine was much stupider' - wheeling on a legendary set piece taker (ie Beckham) just for free kicks or corners.

Not if I was the manager. Keep it simple without the dramatics.

I don't think the "dramatics" were the reason he missed. Rashford has a good penalty record with that style.

Easy to look negatively on that style of penalty when Maguire's was so emphatic, but it's oversimplifying it to suggest that was the only factor.

Rashford has had a weird season, he's being treated for an injury now and wasn't really warmed up. Easy to say in hindsight but perhaps bringing on DCL would've been a better choice.

Agree that it was obvious that Rashford wasn't 100% throughout  as we could all see from his form. Also hindsight is great so easy for us to say but maybe given his now obvious injury then others should have taken precedence.

I hate seeing players trying to be smart when taking penalties. For me the old school way is to blast it out of reach of the keeper ala Maguire.

Whatever happened we need to learn from the experience.

At the end of the day the better team won regardless.

how many times have players tried to blast it out of reach and missed?

It's nothing other than sentiment and "old school" to want a player to smash a penalty. It's no more or less likely to go in if the penalty taker is a good one, look at JETs record.

It was inches away from being superb, sent the keeper the wrong way and hit the post

And JET achieved what exactly ? He was a complete waste of a talent. You cannot use him as your role model in the argument.
