Be amazed if a person was holding up a mobile phone as the first mobile phone were introduced in 1984 and I’m pretty sure they didn’t have a camera function But I do know what you mean , so many peoples filming crowds and atmosphere and not being part of it . I do find very strange that so many people want to film the moment instead of living in the moment. Great picture though

Nickybee
This was the game where Paul Cheesley was injured which led to his retirement, right? Wonder how things would have turned out for him & us had that not happened? He could have gone on to play at international level if you ask me. He had been chosen for the U23's the year before and that performance at Arsenal showed he could scare top flight defenders I honestly think he would have been capped for the full England side . I don't think you can doubt things would have been different. We would probably not been in a relegation fight and we may have kept some momentum and even pressed on. Even if he'd been sold on, that money would have made a massive difference.

This 100% A huge loss, I feel so sorry for Cheese, he had all the ability to succeed in the top flight and it ended in the 2nd game. I was in the open end right in line with the clash with Shilton that finished his career. These days he'd have seen the top specialists and would have played again. I remember reading him saying the club had him running up and down the Dolman stand for hours to " strengthen the knee" he was in agony but kept at it.. in later years when he saw an NHS specialist he told him that was the worst thing to do and had caused irreparable damage. Pure bad luck with the injury, bad landing. But it doesn't sound like he was looked after all that well. GrahamC
From memory (I was 13 then) Donnie Gillies came on as the sub to replace big Cheese & got us a late equaliser by intercepting a back pass. Most of us wrongly assumed Cheese would be back in a week or so but despite one attempt at a comeback (Birmingham at home, October time?) when he only lasted 45 minutes, he was finished. My old man knew a brother of one of the promotion squad really well & he told him that the surgeon was subsequently described by Cheese as “a butcher”, not good at all. Never really replaced the whole time that we were in the old 1st Division. Chris Garland was brought home to provide cover upfront while the next season Joe Royle was a decent centre forward, but neither could really match Cheesley. Alan Dicks quickly realised that the promotion side needed strengthening and without transfer windows could go and recruit as necessary. The biggest and most important recruit that season was Norman “bite yer legs” Hunter (RIP).

I seem to remember Meijer’s debut (possibly vs Birmingham) when he was doing step overs etc & thought it was great

054123
Just the noise. Let the opposition run out to a crescendo of boos, toward there own fans, who are giving it everything they’ve got. Then wait just that fraction of a second for the super reds to run out. Its all so simple, if only they left us alone.
