Forty-three years and three days to be exact. Too slow, Mo. Kevin Mabbutt beat you to it.

Here's Kevin's hat-trick at Old Trafford, from Saturday 21st October 1978. United 1 City 3.

I noticed the error on Twitter (only after someone pointed it out to me), #Lifebefore1992

What's the stat that's so called been beat then?

LFC stated on Twitter that Mo Salah was the only opposition player to get a hat trick at Old Trafford against Man U. They do quote @premierleague in their statement though. I don't know if they are specifying that it was in the Premier League or not. I think they've forgotten that football existed before then

Sky said first Premier League hat trick during the broadcast. Doesn't help that pre 1992 football is barely discussed in the media so the Premier League era has just become the default era of football.

Sadly I’m too young to have been there (only just!!!!).

Was it that blurred on the day???? ?

I’ve watched a few games like that…. After about a dozen pints!

It was filmed on open-reel videotape by John Pearce using a hand-held camera, assisted by his son Jonathan.

I think you mean this one' Manchester United 0 v 1 Bristol City, League Division Two Matchday 28, 1st February 1975, Season 1974-1975, Venue:Old Trafford (mufcinfo.com)

Donnie Gillies told me that he was shitting himself when he put the winner away in front of the Stretford End.

Yes  its poor quality but it was almost never ever seen, because luckily we managed to find a process to rescue what would have been lost forever. The original 1/4 inch film tape, recorded at the game by John Pearce, had unfortunately been badly stored for 35 years and was damaged.

The story began when Downend City and his colleagues at the City Supporters Trust found a bag of 1/4 tapes and after a time of trying to play them, they gave them to me. Although I had the 1/4 film player the tapes were unplayable, literally falling apart but through a 'miracle' we found a process to enable them to be played and identified for what they were. By 'baking them slowly in an oven' at a low temperature for several hours. Amazingly the system worked and retained the important 'backing' from the tape, it enable us to run the tapes and we discovered that on one of them John Pearce had recorded a sequence of the 50 goals scored during the 1978 season, the goals scored at every game during that of City's most successful post war season. To be able to identify each goal; the clips were watched through to identify the game and the teleprinter effect added to illustrate the clip. Thankfully all fifty goals from that season were rescued and can be seen...Hope that makes things a little clearer.. ER... as it were.

No, Sky commentator was talking about Liverpool players who’d scored hatricks against Man Utd - and they mentioned a geezer from the 1930s - so they were obviously talking about pre premier league history ...

The Manchester United historian has confirmed that prior to Mohammed Salah the last players to score hat-tricks for away sides at Old Trafford in the League were Dennis Bailey and before that Kevin Mabbutt.

Manchester United 0 v 5 Liverpool, Premiership Matchday 09, 24th October 2021, Season 2021-2022, Venue:Old Trafford (mufcinfo.com)

Mohamed Salah 1st player to score a opponent hat- trick at Old Trafford since Read Madrid's Ronaldo 12', 50', 59' on 23/04/2003, last player to score an opponent hat-trick at Old Trafford in a League match was QPR's Dennis Bailey 5', 58', 86' on 01/01/1992.

Fantastic. The attendance was 47,000, any idea how many City fans travelled?

Not a clue. No segregation. Away fans were usually spread out on all sides, possibly not at Stretford End. So hearing a lone voice in 47,000 is difficult.

This was our second win at Old Trafford in four seasons.

That was the day that I lost any respect and affection for Man U. The boy who cried all night after Munich, had grown up. Their manager Docherty, slagged City terribly to cover up their inadequacies.

Donnie Gillies specialised in winning away games 1-0. Remember  also Leeds!!!
