Chelsea Safe Standing

Chelsea 12k afaik was 6k home end and 6k away end- roughly?

That's about 2/7 of capacity- so extrapolated to AG that would be about but maybe a bit under 7k in standing.

3.5k in home ends and the same away ends- I'm doing basic maths late on as if our capacity was 28k and can't be bothered to round for 27k at this time.

Can u elaborate on why it's been a disaster?

I imagine it's things like the bottle throwing incident.

As far as I'm concerned though, the club in recent times have done little to encourage vocal/boisterous support. Look at where the "singing section" is - physically as far away from the away support as possible. I appreciate the reasons why, and it probably helps cut policing costs etc.. but it's a disaster for atmosphere.

Aside from the cup games, I can't think of many times there's been a good atmosphere at AG since the redevelopment. It seemed like there was more noise at games when there was 300 in the EastEnd during 07/08. I think there needs to be that back and forth to help get things going atmosphere wise, and it'll never happen with the location of S82 where it is. Annoyingly, the acoustics of the ground are probably the best they've ever been - so when things get going I can see it being pretty loud.

I've said this many times but the club, when they had a blank canvas to work with logistically, should've given the Atyeo to the home fans with away fans shoved in an adjacent corner of the Dolman or Lansdown. You'd get that back and forth whilst also having home support behind both goals. Whilst the ground was being redeveloped, there was opportunity to make this workable as now it's too late.

I think the idea of putting the standing section across the back of the South Stand would be the best option, if there were projectiles from that section they wouldn't reach the pitch. If bottles were thrown on the pitch, it would be more likely to be from the seated section, so that would cancel out the argument that it was because they were standing, and would be blamed on the individual.

Good point. I think that could be a really interesting idea. The SS's acoustics are very good - probably the best in the entire ground - so allowing an expanded singing section by proxy through adding standing rows there would help the atmosphere.

The problem with this is thinking that the singing section is one uniform blob that sings at the same time rather than what I have observed by moving there this year, it's actually at least 6 singing groups that all sing different songs at different times and sometimes 1 song catches on.

Spread those 6 a cross the back of the SS with big gaps between them where the noise is projected out and the different groups can barely hear each other and I think we would be in danger of just having 6 groups singing different songs along the back of the SS.

Maybe, but it would almost certainly result in an improvement on the atmosphere we currently have. Lots more people would feel empowered to join in.

No one can't join in. If there are lots of people that want to join in why don't they now? If we can figure that out then that will give us the problem we want solve.

I think if people are in a quieter block, they'd probably feel a bit self conscious being 1 in 300 people joining in with a song. If vocal fans were spread along the back of the south stand, and thus more people were joining in, you'd naturally get more and more people taking part that normally wouldn't.

It's the same principle as to why generally our away support (pound for pound) produces better atmosphere than our home support.

I’m all for ‘vocal’ support. As a supporter  from the early 70’s, I miss the old match atmosphere as much as the next man. Or at least some of it. I’ve no desire at all to have to stand again  in front of the guy in the Grandstand Enclosure (just to the right of the tunnel) who used to yell “n*****” every time a black player touched the ball. ( Every time. Every game. Season after season. Literally every black player.  And not one of us told him to “f******” shut up.)

But the advocates of a ‘boisterous’ atmosphere are going to have to be a bit more specific. Again, as a supporter from the 70’s,  this could mean anything from a team of cheerleaders comprised of porn stars to a pitched riot in the Open End. Not to mention (occasionally) pissing on the terraces as the queues /crush were too great to get out to the bogs at half time.
