You realise he’s played in shoot outs since then? Came on as a last minute sub and saved 2 in the UEFA super cup at the start of the season and saved one against Villa earlier in this cup.

He holds the Chelsea record for most penalty saves.

And now the record for one of the worst penalty attempts ever, he will have to live with the knowledge he probably cost his team the chance to have won the cup.

It wasn’t his choice to come on, it was pre agreed by the manager based on the data. Worked last time they did it in the super cup.

Bit of a freak circumstance that he has to take a penalty - accepting that he didn’t exactly do well at attempting to save them either!

Shame for any team to lose a game like that, but yes it was a howler, bet if he had the power of hindsight he would have rather not come on, he could have been a hero but unfortunately it went the other way for him.

This is why you gotta love football. The truth is stranger than fiction aspect happens time after time.

Brought on to save penalties in a shoot-out.

Saves= 0 (NONE!)

Lets in= 11 (ELEVEN)

Then misses the vital spot kick himself.

Sounds like it's made up.

 Football.

Was hilarious.  Couldn't have been any worse for him

Maybe he was hoping the ref would send him off for constantly trying to put off the Liverpool takers

That was the perfect resolution of that game.  There's something quite unlikeable about him.  Seems like a proper little legend in his own lunchtime.   The ridiculous thing was that Mendy has only recently won a penalty shoot out with Senegal.

Fair play to the ref just telling to get back on the line and to the Liverpool players for holding their nerve.

After the second time of asking the ref should have booked him, arrogant piece of shit.

The young Liverpool goalkeeper on the other hand showed so much more respect and delivered!

Good ending to a really good 0 - 0 draw.

I'd have thought with the power of hindsight he'd have just dived the right way for every penalty.

Couldn’t agree more - book him the first time - does it again he gets sent off and an outfield player has to come on!

Respect should be shown - like Kelleher did!

Bring on a keeper for the penalty shoot out, doesn’t save any of 11 and misses his.

Cant make that up

By strange coincidence, David de Gea missed United's twelfth spot-kick in the Europa League Final against Villareal last season in an 11-10 defeat.

Mind you, he was wearing slippers judging by the attempt...

When it works it looks good (i.e. Krul on for Cillessen in the World Cup), but otherwise foolish.

I recall after the World Cup in 1990 people were asking why we didn't bring Dave Beasant on for penalties v Germany, probably because he wasn't on the bench!  Wasn't there a play-off final once where the same happened as well (Leicester I think?)
