Yes of course, it was phenomenal - just like our league cup runs to the semi finals were in 1970/1971 and 1988/1989 - but the fact remains, we were in an automatic promotion spot on Boxing Day and we finished 11th - not decent ... Let’s be honest we weren’t expecting to be pushing for the play offs that season. Therefore 11th, albeit it disappointing since Boxing Day, and a great cup run, lead to a decent season. At worst, we should have made the playoffs- I believe top 2 was too big an ask but we should definitely with the margin for error we had, combined with the confidence of the Cup run have got top 6 IMO. Should not could. OTOH LJ had his good points, and his bad points but not to make top 6 minimum of once in his tenure- for differing reasons in each case- this was a failure I believe. 2017/18 Aforementioned head start on most of the League, and the massive confidence from the Cup run. A wealth of Cup experience from 2013/14 to then in the squad would have really helped in the playoffs. 2018/19 One more CM- or trusting Walsh and Morrell more in order not to play Pack and Brownhill into the ground, playing a genuine 3 in there from time to time to ease a bit of pressure- might have helped us all round, would also say another CM and striker might have made the difference between a playoff place and just missing out. Some of that Cup experience still remained which would have helped in the playoffs. Occasionally putting Weimann as central striker, and rotating Diedhiou- by all means use him in some of those tougher away games where we have less of the ball...but an extra CM between Brownhill and Pack, then Paterson, O'Dowda/Eliasson and Weimann...interesting possibilities and would reduce a temptation to hit it long with big Diedhiou up front. 2019/20 The worst football of the 3 years but otoh he had everything he wanted...Benkovic, Henriksen, Wells- arguably didn't use any of these 3 correctly post addition, he had what he wanted- as well as Bentley, Kalas, DaSilva, Nagy, Massengo, Afobe in the summer- albeit a few of these came later. Yes he largely had what he wanted, although bad luck with injury early (within 6 weeks Kalas, DaSilva, Nagy, Afobe ranging from medium to season ending injuries), he perhaps could have utilised his squad better tactically amongst other failings.
