But the winners can get some extra medals I believe they pay for them, and do often buy a few for players such as the number 2 goalie. 2

I had thought Balotelli didn't win a medal and they later changed the rules such you now only need 10 appearances to qualify. Wiki says he started 14 and came off the bench 9 times. Poor old Gareth and the chokers from the summer. A tad harsh- they clearly are a strong side in possession for a start, they utterly dominated Macedonia but no goals...and that's the only stat that counts. Generally they dominate goals but for some reason, unlike the Italy of old they are not often so clinical.

Think of the possession rate.

What is it with Chelsea ? Since you asked… They were a middle-ranking team throughout their history that occasionally won trophies but also occasionally dipped into the second tier, until a shady billionaire oligarch sailed up the Thames on his megayacht and roided them up into a domestic and European powerhouse. Now that everything Russian is verboten, they will swiftly shrivel back into what they once were. I look forward to seeing them back at the Gate with a contemporary Dave Beassant being harried by contemporary Turner and Gavin in due course.

Nah generally dominant in games- not just possession- simply one striker in particular who is strong at club level even vs decent Italian sides and with a good CL record is somewhat lacking at international level. Plus both of their games v Switzerland finished as draws. They win either and they qualify- Jorginho missed a penalty in each. Mr Popodopolous
On a general note, the one legged straight knock out play off adds real drama. Interesting addition even if perhaps partially brought about by Covid? What a story it would be if Macedonia completed the job v Portugal- beating Italy in Italy was a huge shock in its own right. Plus from an England perspective, if Macedonia are the last team standing out of them, Italy, Portugal and even on their day Turkey- that suits us quite well. This is exactly what I am wishing for Bournemouth; a return to Div 4. Justice for the cheating they got away with. Their Russian has not been mentioned though, thus far ....... Dr Balls
Shame that Andi was denied a late winner against the Scots by an inspired keeper, after again coming on as a substitute. With a new manager due to take over the Austrian national team, Andi might hope to get a few more caps if he maintains his current form. Just hope that we hold onto him too! Kalas and the Czechs got knocked out. Anyone else in our current squad qualify? Maybe Sam Pearson, IIRC he's played for Wales, but probably unlikely to make their squad I guess. Watched the game & at 0-2 down when Austria made a triple substitution on the hour & he didn’t get on, I thought I bet the change of coach can’t come soon enough for him. He was unlucky with his chance, Gordon made an excellent save & he did well. I just wonder though at 31 in August & no tournament on the horizon whether the new bloke will look to the future & this might be a brief return to international football?
