Derby hoping for a 32 team tournament testimonial?

I guess the difference now is who would put their hands in their own pockets to help out footballers earning hundreds of thousands of pounds a year to play at the foot of the second tier of football.

Did you mean the third tier? ?

Frightening to think that a couple of dozen of the highest paid players could pay off the debts of a few clubs!

Yup.

A player from our Alan Dicks era First Division squad told me that he used to earn £800 a week basic back then. Not a bad crack in 1980: probably equivalent to a company director or an established barrister etc in those days.  Now, a top tier player even at a smaller club would be earning more than CEOs of many multinational businesses. Only film stars, successful City traders and gangsters will be earning more.
