Northern Red
Always used to laugh whenever it was announced that Ray Lewis came from Great Bookham, perfect location for a referee.
Robbored
Saying where referees are from must have something to do with taking pressure off the ref himself. Imagine if City were playing Lincoln City and the ref was from Boston and he awarded them two penalties? Our fans would accuse him of being biased. cider hoss rules
Brian ‘Gabby’ Stevens only gave up refereeing in 2019 aged 80! Still lives in Stonehouse and still loves to talk about the game. https://www.stroudnewsandjournal.co.uk/sport/17909979.final-whistle-referee-brian-stevens-80-calls-time-career-3-102-matches/ And has some very fond memories of Brian Clough in particular. 1

Red-Robbo
My old geography teacher Alec Lees was a ref, who even reached International levels (he reffed an historic Soviet Union v China game in the 70s). Us kids always liked to take the pee on Monday when Mr Lees got a 0/5 rating in the Sunday papers after an inept display.
Ronnie Sinclair
I can almost hear Brian Moore on The Big Match reading out the referee's name before kick-off - "and today's referee is George Courtney from Spennymoor"

He was the Ref for us in a cup game ( South Devon League) late 70s. We drew so Lester had to do the replay. He was right pissed off as he would have been doing a top flight game that Saturday, still he must have enjoyed it, well we did as we won the replay!!!!!
