Guest
Sad news indeed for a truly great player; having had a bowel Cancer tumor removed myself 3 yrs ago and so far clear of any spread I can only guess its a matter of luck or timing as to wether its successfull or not. Hope for better news soon Pele and others going through this terrible big C

Rocking Red Cyril
It is always such sad news when any great player passes on. Pele was the first to show many great skills and allowed the game and on coming great players to expand and develop the game in new inventive ways. And his humble nature was always wonderful to see. He will be sadly missed always the greatest in my book.

Firstly it was the 1962 WC that Pelé was kicked out of (by Chile, so not North Korea or Portugal, 3 completely different continents or in 1966). Secondly he isn’t actually dead, so why the past tense was used above I have no idea. Edited December 3, 2022 by GrahamC
cidered abroad
The greatest in my time. Went to Wembley in early 1960's to see Brasil but big disappointment as he did not play due to injury.
Admin phantom Posted December 3, 2022 Admin Report Share Posted December 3, 2022 He's just released this statement Which translates to: "My friends, I want to keep everyone calm and positive. "I'm strong, with a lot of hope and I follow my treatment as usual. "I want to thank the entire medical and nursing team for all the care I have received. "I have a lot of faith in God and every message of love I receive from you all over the world keeps me full of energy. And watch Brazil in the World Cup too! "Thank you so much for everything. ." 1 1
Port Said Red
Pele assist (at walking pace of course) in the greatest WC final goal ever. Does he even look for Carlos Alberta? 3

It's certainly an odd feeling. My mother recently went through the same experience. Palliative care and bowel cancer. Such a drawn out horrible disease. You wouldn't wish it on your worst enemy or those associated with them. I can only feel for him and his family. Until you experience it, it just doesn't really hit home how awful it is. You were so lucky to see him play. I had a signed Pele programme from when Santos played Fulham the same year as the Plymouth game you saw in 1973. Wish I hadn't sold it now. Some huge crowds attended to watch Santos and some shenanigans. Nice article here https://www.theguardian.com/football/2015/jul/14/the-forgotten-story-of-pele-and-the-santos-touring-circus Yeah just your getting old Spud. I could go on.
Robbored
Carlos Alberto is no longer with us. He passed about 6 or 7 years ago. The fourth goal he scored in the 1970 WC final against Italy was voted as the best team goal in WC history. It’s obvious to see why.

It didn't start with a centre half beating 4 players either.

Red-Robbo
Sadly, I think he's on the way out. In Latin America Pele has kept his legend alive by doing a substantial series of adverts for Viagra. Fair play to the fella, he did the ads, but released a statement - after pisstaking - pointing out "Pele endorses Viagra, but he doesn't have to use Viagra"

George Cohen and Geoff Hurst that are still with us from the 1966 team? Charlton has dementia as well sadly. Given he is our greatest player it will be a truly sad day for English football when he passes. As for Pele, a two goals in a world cup final aged what, 17? Incredible. ExiledAjax
Memento mori. If Pele wishes to live on then I hope he does so, if he wishes to die with dignity then I hope he does so. Second one: I was about to post something very similar a couple of days ago but then I googled it - and actually that Portugal v Brazil game in 1966 is still noted as being both ‘controversial’ and as one where Pele was given ‘special attention’ and left the game injured. So to some extent both are true (not the N Korea bit though!). And on your third paragraph, yes, it does seem a bit premature…. I’m a believer that people at that stage of life can decide to a point how long they want to keep going and when to give in to it - and I’d imagine Pele would want to see Brazil lift the World Cup. So it’s perhaps premature to be talking in the past tense. On the other hand, I’m sure I heard Klinsmann on TV the other night when it was announced make some comment along the lines of wishing Pele well and that he’d recover soon - which somehow seemed equally inappropriate.

Hands up , I wrote about the legend Pèle in the past tense because it was reported that he was on palliative care after his operation, plainly speaking he was/is on his deathbed. I would be delighted if he pulls through and once again amazes the world.
