The biggest club to be relegated out of the league

When I lived in Yorkshire between ‘63 & ‘76 I watched Park Avenue a few times, and I can attest that it was a big ground (also bordering a county cricket pitch). It might have been the biggest, but in my mind’s eye I had always assumed that Port Vale had the biggest in the league. Happy to be wrong though.

I remember watching Somerset play Yorkshire in a JPL game at Bradford back when counties used out grounds. The BPA ground was still there albeit falling down and with the goalposts almost covered by ten foot weeds. It was a very sad sight.

Notts County are the answer to the question “Which team involved in the establishment of the premier league have never played a game in the division”.

Luton are also a valid answer to this question, at least for now. Like Notts County they were relegated from the top flight in the season (1991-92) that preceded the first premier league season, and haven’t been back in the top flight since.

It has to be Notts County,. one of the 12 founders of the Football League, a Division One club between the wars, always a Division 2 (Championship) club in the 60's when I started supporting City.

My pick as well given their history. Where would Juventus be strip wise if it weren't for Notts Co ?

And manager of the Bristol City team that beat Brighton in….

Sorry, I was just thinking of Leroy Lita and got a bit carried away.

If only he'd played both of the Rougier brothers at the Mill Stad !

My shout is Notts County. For longevity and sheer history. Even Juventus based their choice of kit on the mighty Notts County.

If you’re talking about clubs in terms of infrastructure then arguably, with a ground capacity of 25,500 at the time it would be Darlington.

It’s a little reminder for clubs who believe that success only comes from building a big stadium then you might want to be careful what you wish for and think again. (Not mentioning any club we might know who have a life long obsession with getting a bigger stadium….ok, **** it, Bristol Rovers).

Here’s a little reminder of what the fruit market might end up being like…..

More on the pitch than in the stands!
