Sub 20 World Cup Draw and possible controversy

The draw for the sub 20 World Cup to be held in Argentina takes place shortly at 3 pm.

Alex Scott’s England are in pot 2 and could be drawn to play Argentina (pot 1) in Mendoza in the el estadio Malvinas Argentinas.

The tournament has been switched from Indonesia because said country refused to admit the Israeli team.  It will be interesting to see if FIFA, which is allegedly neutral, will allow the inclusion of a stadium with such an overtly political name.

My daughter thought the Malvinas Islands were the same as the Maldives.  Mrs Fevs and my honeymoon might’ve been a bit different if so!

The name of the stadium is not political, simply the Spanish name for the Falkland Islands. The city of Mendoza however is clearly political having been named after Garcia Hurtado de Mendoza y Manrique, 5th Marquis of Canete, a 16th century Governor of Chile and a Viceroy of Peru.

It does seem like a political statement. The name was changed after the Falklands war according to Wikipedia and there doesn't seem to be any other reason to name it after a group of disputed islands 2000km away from the stadium other than to make a point.

I hope you’re right. I would have no clue who is good and who isn’t. Fiji? Didn’t even know they played footy!

It certainly doesn't follow that good young international sides are from countries with good senior sides, it's often an indicator of who we should be looking out for in 3-5 years time.

It's interesting how few representatives from Europe there are at that level, Italy and France are the only other ones there.

Slovakia too but I get your point. It would be interesting to see which clubs the players from some of the smaller nations play for - do they still play in their home countries  or have they been picked up by the bigger clubs in the world at age 12?
